# Rozelle: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Rozelle and the rest of South Ayrshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Contact us before everything else happens, so you'll know what happens next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Never crank it — and do not rely on it if it does start. That is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a few miles. It's not fine. It's eating into the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into just those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Merkland Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never moved.

- The van showing up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning KA7 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.

- What went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has fired — the three facts shape the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A big chunk of the job gets completed at the pump, as that is where it mostly starts.

We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at BP that is generally where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, the mistake is spotted with your engine never run, and no place else manages that.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where your car sits.

The staff will normally offer to wheel the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing.

Firing the car over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Petrol in the Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Spar, somewhere in Rozelle? Then call us, and leave your engine out of it — not even to exit the bay. A technician comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses little, and so these tend to be the straightforward cases.

## Parts we cover around Rozelle

Rozelle is a residential suburb, and our vans head out to the town and to the places around it on the same journeys: Laigh Glengall, Kincaidston, Alloway, Belleisle and Belmont.

We still come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places across South Ayrshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us and enquire rather than assuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav might struggle with.

This map outlines the area the page covers.

The car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and usually it won't run, and so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. That's the snag, and it is why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely usual coming back from the local primary school. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Stuck by the kerbside in Rozelle

Not everybody gets a safe place to pull in.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge on Lindston Place, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you wait with the motor or step away from it hangs on whether being nearby feels wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

We'll send the van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

What we'll want to know is whether that run there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can get past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Ford Focus standing in the car park by the pub in the village carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing deteriorates whilst it waits, so leave it there overnight and ring us in the morning.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your M77 comes in — under 25 miles away from Rozelle.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Do not start it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe junction and turn off.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in the van.

## Where is Rozelle?

Rozelle is a coastal suburban area in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Alloway and Ayr. Rozelle sits at an elevation of 21 metres, overlooking the Firth of Clyde, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Rozelle is located near several smaller communities, including Laigh Glengall and Kincaidston, and is within commuting distance of Glasgow.

## What we do when our engineers get to you around Rozelle

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- The tainted fuel comes out of that tank.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- The engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

Your pump waits upstream of your injectors, so whatever a worn-out one loses moves on with the fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Ring us, then leave your diesel Peugeot 3008 where it is near Maclaurin Art Gallery.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Rozelle?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — never crank it — but this fault isn't.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Rozelle has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

A motor you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the quantity of petrol getting to the fuel injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar spots see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Robert Burns Cottage or not, and we will get to the Mercedes A-Class.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Rozelle

What moves the figure is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Rozelle drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Rozelle petrol station forecourt

A good part of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not turn it back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
