# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Runwell

Don't fire up the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Runwell and the rest of Essex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us and we can explain what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never crank it — and never believe it if it fires up. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's grinding the fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those components.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Runwell Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Before you call, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting SS11 7 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- Three replies settle the entire job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark amount involved, and if anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Wickford since breakfast? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is harmless. It was the trip in that sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Call us before you move it.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

It starts at the pump, generally. Frequently the job finishes at one as well.

The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's agreement, that's somewhere we work, and often.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the only place the mistake is caught.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the offer.

Shifting it four bays doesn't merit starting it.

## Service around Runwell

Runwell is a village, and so we go out to it and to the places near it on the same rounds: Wickford, Rawreth Shot, Shotgate, Rawreth and Battlesbridge.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and nearly all locations in Essex have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Call us and check rather than assuming.

Look at our map for the ground included here.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians work on, and none of it requires the car to come to us.

## Runwell: broken down wherever you stopped

Not everyone has a safe place to pull in.

If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge beside Locarno Avenue, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a routine call for us instead of an odd one.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it.

Do not fire up the motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the system.

Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult location, and that's no bother for us.

You drive off at the end, once we have started the engine and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park at The Quart Pot, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we reach the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where your M25 counts, under 15 miles away from Runwell.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and do not restart it to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in our van.

Happy on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how that trip to Runwell Playing Fields went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Audi A3 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

## Runwell itself

Runwell is a village in Essex, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 11 metres, near the cities of Chelmsford and London. Runwell has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and is located close to nearby places such as Wickford, Rawreth Shot, and Shotgate. Runwell remains a relatively small community, with a population of approximately 2037 residents.

## Our visit around Runwell, step by step

- We establish what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The polluted fuel is drawn out of that tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

After that it is ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

The pump waits upstream of your injectors, so whatever a wearing one gives off moves onward with your fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Ford Kuga where it's near St Mary, Runwell.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Runwell?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this problem under it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Runwell has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — close to Wickford War Memorial or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a misfuelled diesel BMW X1 telling you what is wrong.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Runwell?

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank takes.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

## Runwell drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Runwell?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more often than motorists expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people expect.

Throughout Essex and around Runwell: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
