# Rushmere: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Rushmere or the rest of Bedfordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Contact us before anything else begins, and you'll hear what comes after that.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Switching your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition off.

- Never dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- We would much rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Old Linslade Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning LU7 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has started — these three details decide your whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and so a diesel Volkswagen Passat left outside Leighton Buzzard this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled diluted diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone us before you set off to collect it.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

The work starts at a forecourt, generally. Regularly it ends on site too.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Tesco that is generally where this drain happens.

No place but a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the engine still unrun.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting the car four lengths does not merit cranking the engine.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry our engineers want sounds like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off outside Tesco.

## Can our technicians serve your corner of Rushmere?

Old Linslade, Heath and Reach, Bragenham, Fox Corner, Linslade — all of those on our trips that bring us across to Rushmere as well, a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all locations in Bedfordshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing whatsoever about whether we come.

Near the border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone to check rather than assuming.

That map shows the area the page includes.

The lot is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

## Stranded by the roadside in Rushmere

Not everyone has the chance to stop somewhere sensible.

Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge of Plantation Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it.

Do not restart it to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system.

However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than driving on.

Easy job, this one — until someone drives it home. A diesel Mercedes E-Class left at The Star with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park it and call us once it's light. Expect a question about that run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.

## Run it already? Stop, then see below

The local M1 is the one which matters here, and lies under 10 miles from Rushmere.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through — that is the whole process. It accounts for the normal Leighton Buzzard Golf Club call too: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A little about Rushmere

Rushmere is a small suburban area in Bedfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse at an elevation of around 99 metres. Rushmere lies near the towns of Old Linslade and Heath and Reach, and is within commuting distance of Milton Keynes. Rushmere has a population of approximately 705 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Rushmere is also relatively close to London, being around 37.9 miles from the capital city.

## What our technicians do when we reach you around Rushmere

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- That tank is emptied completely.

- What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.

- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- Our technicians turn it on and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Three things help when you call from close to St Mary’s Church: which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and so the place itself is seldom the problem — we'd much rather deal with a narrow parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your BMW X1, change the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, flush the fuel lines then put clean fuel through the entire circuit, as by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines instead of in your tank.

## Rushmere AdBlue removal is a separate matter

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Rushmere page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Rushmere?

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Rushmere

## At a petrol station in Rushmere, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a fair part of this work happens.

Often, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more regularly than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## You, and the car, still together?

Keep the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Emptying misfuelled motors, Rushmere and the rest of Bedfordshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
