# Ryall: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: your motor remains off. Pause there.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a drain and a flush, done right where your vehicle stands, and what you do in the next few minutes determines that more than anything else.

Here's the sequence of things from now, wherever you're in Ryall.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

- The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms.

- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel leaves you, because it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.

- Being seen comes first near moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then deal with everything else.

- By hand, never under the motor: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the mileage.

- The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

On the M5, under 3 miles from Ryall, the next junction is the spot to leave the car; elsewhere, the first sensible place to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## Each Ryall fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If the motor hasn't run at all:

- Just your tank has petrol in it for now.

- Where your car sits is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- Stage one counts for exactly this reason: it is the best place to be in.

Run at all, however briefly:

- From your tank, past your filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far the petrol has travelled.

- A bigger run carries it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job grows with the mileage — lines flushed, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

The line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't.

In that tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Ryall

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that goes round.

- Where you are. A postcode beginning WR8 0 is the best start.

- A road name is a help: A4104, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for instance — and it's much quicker to find.

- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of the car.

- Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Ryall.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it's run. And if it has, how far plus how hard.

- Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's go-ahead for the work, and getting it before our engineers turn up is faster than after.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## The wait for a Ryall fuel drain, and what to do in it

Hold to these: well-meant help does the damage during the wait.

- Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it sits, stay with it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Anything from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.

- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Ignition stays off. Even for your radio or your windows.

## When our van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- First, three queries: which fuel got in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers set the job, so our price follows them.

- Out of your tank comes the contaminated mixture: that tank is drained.

- If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond the tank — so they are rinsed.

- Where the car has a serviceable filter, it's swapped; if not, cleared.

- Priming follows after clean diesel is in.

- Starting up. Once your system is bled with clean diesel, our engineers start the engine and confirm it runs properly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our technicians leave.

If it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare, and your car goes back to normal driving right away.

## After the fuel drain is done: driving in Ryall once more

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and call us again.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, and so hold on to your documents.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
