# Saintfield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Saintfield or the rest of County Down, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before everything else happens, so you'll learn what comes next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Do not start the car. Turned on anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: turning it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Dunskey Street, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BT24 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, approximately how much, and also if the car has started. Those three facts decide your whole job.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Volkswagen Passat parked at the nearest station this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed weakened diesel through the pump was the trip in. Phone us before you set off to fetch it.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

A large portion of the work is completed at the pump, as that is where it usually begins.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else except a garage can this be halted with your motor still unstarted.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Renault Clio in Saintfield and you are now sat outside the local shops with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us. Do not start the car a second time to exit that spot. We'll head your way, clear your tank, flush those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle draws little fuel, so these tend to be the straightforward ones.

## Saintfield plus the towns beside it

As a small village, Saintfield has a regular call, whilst its neighbours close by go along on that same trip: Ballygowan and Listooder, Carryduff and Crossgar, Ballynahinch.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of towns across County Down, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours.

Guessing is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Phone and check.

The ground this page spans is on this map.

The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive your car anywhere.

## Saintfield: stuck where you pulled up

The opportunity to stop anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge of South Crescent, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by the motor or move clear of it turns on if being in it seems wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

What our technicians will ask is whether that run there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the car park outside the pub in the village carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates as it sits, and so park the vehicle overnight then call us next morning.

## Run it already? Pull over, and see this

Here is where the M77 comes into it — over 50 miles away from Saintfield.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Get off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never restart it to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in our van.

## A little about Saintfield

Saintfield is a locality in County Down, situated inland at an elevation of 69 metres, approximately 8.8 miles from Lisburn. Saintfield is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near other small settlements such as Ballygowan and Carryduff. Saintfield has a population of around 1673 people and is part of the wider region surrounding Belfast. Saintfield is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 312.7 miles.

## What happens when our technicians arrive with you in Saintfield

- Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- The polluted fuel is drawn out of that tank.

- Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what created the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running correctly.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

## Saintfield AdBlue removal is a separate matter

The fault is not the same, though the first step is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal around Saintfield has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then phone us about the Peugeot 208, the diesel one, near a street just off the centre. Don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was — nearly no one can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our engineers work out on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Saintfield

What changes the price is set out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank holds.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

By this point the tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got by the far end of the built-up part needs the circuit purged, not drained.

## Saintfield drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt around Saintfield. Can you drain the car here?

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more regularly than drivers assume.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
