# Salford Quays: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Salford Quays and the rest of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Phone before everything else happens, and you'll know what follows after that.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the car. And having started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Switching your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.

- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd rather get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Broadway, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting M50 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run. These three details decide the entire visit.

Quarter past eight. A fast fill on the way in. Somewhere around eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel BMW 3 Series has waited at Manchester United Football Club for three hours. Phone then keep the vehicle where it sits. What matters is the trip in, since diesel both ignites and — before that — greases the pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked the pump on a fluid drained of most of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about miles instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys be till our technicians get there.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a fair portion of it finishes.

If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that is usually where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

At the forecourt, it gets stopped with the motor never started, and nowhere else manages that.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Move the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Peugeot 308, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Sainsbury's now. Time passed isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

## Service in Salford Quays

Being a residential suburb, Salford Quays has a frequent call, while the areas round about come with it on that same journey: Weaste and Wharfside, Salford and Trafford Park, Seedley.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns around Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Phone and ask instead of assuming, particularly when you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav can't find.

The area this page includes sits on our map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we serve, and none of that requires your car to travel to us.

## Roadside breakdowns around Salford Quays

A chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everyone.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge on Blue, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.

Fine where you are? Sit with it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it.

Don't fire up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the local M602 comes in — under a mile away from Salford Quays.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they come are generally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the next safe exit then turn off.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under a mile to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever your diesel Citroen C3 did on the way to The Green, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive it home to buy any.

## Salford Quays itself

Salford Quays is a suburban area located on the riverside in Greater Manchester, sitting at an elevation of 21 metres and adjacent to the city of Salford. Salford Quays is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is situated near other local areas such as Weaste and Wharfside. Salford Quays has a population of approximately 2680 residents and is part of the wider Salford urban area.

## What comes next when our engineers get to you in Salford Quays

- The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- Away comes the polluted fuel.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what created the problem, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- We fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left close to Upsy Daisy. For a diesel Audi Q5 whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Salford Quays is a distinct problem

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never start the car — but this problem isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Salford Quays has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol getting to your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by GoChurch or not, and we will get to the Skoda Superb.

## Salford Quays pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

## Salford Quays motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Salford Quays petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through your fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists assume.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more regularly than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.

Across Greater Manchester and in Salford Quays: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
