# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Salhouse? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Salhouse and the remainder of Norfolk. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not run and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Ring us before all else starts, and you'll see what follows after that.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never start the car. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Mill Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts NR13 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has been turned over. Your replies settle all that happens next.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where the work often starts, and where a big chunk of that finishes.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at JET that's normally where the drain takes place.

No place but a garage can the mistake be spotted with your motor still unstarted.

We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

The staff will normally happily wheel the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Salhouse plus the villages near it

Being a rural village, Salhouse has a frequent call, and the areas close by go along on that same run: Primrose Corner and Little Plumstead, New Rackheath and Woodbastwick, Rackheath.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most towns across Norfolk, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Phone to check instead of guessing, especially where you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

That map is the area the page covers.

Every bit of that is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. The Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Salhouse CofE Primary School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Stranded by the kerbside in Salhouse

Some drivers have no safe spot to pull over whatsoever.

Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge on Honeycombe Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Okay where you are? Remain by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

However difficult the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Don't chance it. The journey home from The Stag is perfectly possible, which is precisely the issue — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components the fuel is meant to lubricate. Phone, and let the Audi A6 stay where it stands.

## Run it already? Pull in, then read below

Here is where the local M11 comes in, over 50 miles out of Salhouse.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never start it to move it. Get off at the next safe exit and turn off.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Hagg Wood, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Citroen C3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, ring us.

## About Salhouse

Salhouse is a rural village in Norfolk, situated approximately 5.9 miles north of Norwich and 103.8 miles northeast of London. Salhouse sits in a low-lying area at an elevation of around 21 metres, surrounded by other small settlements like Primrose Corner and Little Plumstead. Salhouse has a population of around 1012 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

## What follows when our engineers arrive with you around Salhouse

- We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.

- Our engineers drain the tank of the polluted fuel.

- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, and so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime your system.

- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump waits ahead of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump sheds moves downstream with your fuel. Leave the Volkswagen Polo by Salhouse Village Sign then ring us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Salhouse is a distinct problem

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Salhouse page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Salhouse

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

What occurs next is the trouble. The engine at once draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that tip is half right, as do it to a diesel Mercedes GLC parked up, All Saints Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, and that is the difference between your car being put right and the car just starting.

## Salhouse drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt around Salhouse. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
