# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sandhurst?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Sandhurst and the rest of Kent. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Our technicians shall tell you what your next move will be. Phone — this happens before anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And if started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would much rather get to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Rye Road, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning TN18 5 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.

- Three replies decide the entire visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity of it, plus whether anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Much of the work starts at a forecourt, meaning a fair chunk of that is finished on site.

Still at JET? Then that's generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the one setting it is halted.

We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the assistance.

Shifting the car four bays does not justify cranking the motor.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Tesco now. Time elapsed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

## Areas we serve around Sandhurst

The same journeys take us to Sandhurst Cross, Linkhill, Field Green, Standen Street and Peters Green as well as Sandhurst, which is a rural village.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most places across Kent, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Assuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles. Ring us and check.

See this map for the patch shown here.

Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Sandhurst Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave your engine alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a run taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

## Stranded on the kerbside near Sandhurst

Not everyone has the chance to pull over somewhere safe.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge of Queen Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us and not an odd one.

Remain beside your car while it is safe to wait inside, yet clear of the vehicle if it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

This is where the M20 comes in, under 15 miles away from Sandhurst.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the precision components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that trip to Sandhurst Sports Ground went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

## A little about Sandhurst

Sandhurst is a small village in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of around 55 metres, and is located near the villages of Sandhurst Cross and Linkhill. Sandhurst has a population of approximately 670 residents and features predominantly semi-detached housing. Sandhurst is close to Field Green and is within commuting distance of Canterbury, which is around 28 miles away. Sandhurst is also about 45 miles from London, making it a rural option for those working in the capital.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Sandhurst

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.

- Out goes the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.

- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- After it's started, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Sandhurst?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the fault underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Sandhurst has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that's a misfilled diesel Audi A3 telling you what's wrong. Don't restart the car to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, close to St Nicholas, Sandhurst or anywhere else.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Sandhurst

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle ragged, and the diesel BMW 5 Series is parked up near St Giles. Your engine isn't packing up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours normally get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and phone us.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Sandhurst

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Sandhurst?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this gets done.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than drivers assume.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

The engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Sandhurst and throughout Kent.
