# Sayers Common: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Sayers Common or the remainder of West Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

One ring our way is plenty: we can explain what comes next. Make it first.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never start it. Fired up all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Flicking your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.

- Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on London Road, put those hazards on then keep the car there.

- Our van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning BN6 9, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you dial.

- What got in, about how many litres, and also if your car has run — the three facts settle your whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

How many miles you drove is what we query, not how long your motor has been standing — and here's why. Diesel has two roles on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before burning it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill on the way in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf standing outside Hassocks since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were covered with the pump labouring on a fuel drained of a great deal of its protection. Call us then leave the car exactly where it sits.

## Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Much of this job starts at the pump, so a fair chunk of that is finished there.

If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's normally where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be halted with your engine still unrun.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys.

Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Very much worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call our engineers hope for goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now turned off outside Tesco.

## Parts our team serve around Sayers Common

Albourne Green, Twineham, Hickstead, West Town, Albourne Street — all of them on our trips that take us out to Sayers Common itself, a village.

Our engineers still come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across West Sussex, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Near a border, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Phone to enquire rather than assuming.

The ground this page includes appears on our map.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car does not need to come to us.

Move the car out of the gateway and deal with it later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags at Albourne Church of England Primary School, a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series is a nuisance and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Ring us.

## Stuck on the kerbside around Sayers Common

Some drivers have no sensible place to pull in at all.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Nuthatch Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Remain beside the vehicle while it is sensible to wait there, yet clear of the vehicle if it isn't.

Do not restart the motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the fuel system.

We'll take the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M23 counts, under 10 miles away from Sayers Common.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start it to reposition.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

## Where is Sayers Common?

Sayers Common is a village in West Sussex, situated near the River Adur and close to the South Downs National Park. Sayers Common has a low elevation of around 20 metres and is located near several other small villages, including Albourne Green and Twineham. Sayers Common is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is within commuting distance of Brighton and Hove. Sayers Common is also relatively close to London, being approximately 38.5 miles away.

## When we reach you in Sayers Common: what we do

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses change what the work really is.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Your engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

## Sayers Common AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the fault underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Sayers Common page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Ford Kuga by The Church Hall. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out there all the same. Our engineers ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## Sayers Common pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel Mercedes GLC is parked up near Christ Church. The engine is not giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours usually get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and call us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Sayers Common

## Fuel drains on a Sayers Common petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable a lot more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to cope with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers fear.
