# Scotter: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never fire up your engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Scotter and the remainder of Lincolnshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Contact us so our engineers shall show you what happens from here before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Do not fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into just those components.

- Don't put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Our team would sooner get to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Hobb Lane, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting DN21 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how much, and if the motor has run. Those three answers decide the entire call-out.

Phone before you move the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the car at Kirton Lindsey ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is dormant, and any harm happened on the journey in, when the pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A fair portion of the job gets done at a forecourt, as that is where it usually kicks off.

The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the station's permission, that is a spot our engineers work, and often.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still unstarted.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car sits.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth it.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

The phone call our technicians hope for sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off outside Lincolnshire Co-op. What we're truly asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Coverage in Scotter

Scotter is a village, and so our team get out to the town and to the areas by it on the same trips: Scotterthorpe, Scotton, Messingham, Northorpe and Manton.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of places across Lincolnshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours.

Ring us to enquire instead of guessing — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your phone might struggle with.

The map is the ground this page covers.

All of that is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

## Scotter: stuck wherever you parked

Not everybody has a safe spot to stop.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of The Green since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not safe? Get out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

A technician driving to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than carrying on.

Three replies determine most of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we reach the vehicle in the car park outside Sun & Anchor. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system bled, our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly before you pull away.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then see below

The local M180 is the one that matters here, and runs under 5 miles from Scotter.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart the car to move it.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Scotter Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once the fuel is sorted.

## Where is Scotter?

Scotter is a village in Lincolnshire, situated on the banks of the River Trent at a low elevation of around 12 metres. Scotter lies near several smaller settlements, including Scotterthorpe and Scotton, and is approximately 18.9 miles from the city of Lincoln. Scotter has a population of around 1879 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Scotter is located in the East Midlands region, about 139.4 miles north of London.

## What our technicians do when our technicians get to you around Scotter

- The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- We clean your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's left in the system is not what started the issue.

- We put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by St Peter. For a diesel Audi A3 whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get cleaned and not just your tank cleared.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Scotter?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't start it — but this problem isn't.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Scotter has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

## Scotter prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Scotter

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Scotter?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this takes place.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep the car off.

It is recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Shut off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect.

Across Lincolnshire and around Scotter: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
