# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Scraptoft: What Happens Now

Stop. Engine off. Keep the car that way — no moment on, no shifting it at all.

Cleared then purged, just where it is: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes ahead far more than on anything else.

Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you are in Scraptoft.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

In this order, and before everything else:

- Pull your keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it harms, and so keep the vehicle off completely.

- A fuller tank of the same mix is all topping up gives you, because it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.

- Being seen comes before the rest beside moving traffic: put the hazard lights on, and only then deal with anything else.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, roll the vehicle away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to lend a hand.

- The first question we will ask is which fuel went in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Keep it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M1, under 10 miles from Scraptoft, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Stage one comes after that.

## Scraptoft fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Engine never run at all?

- No place but the tank: that's where the petrol yet is.

- Where your car stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- This, here, is the best position to be in, and the reason stage one matters.

Engine run, however briefly?

- Some petrol has left the tank already, gone through your filter, and got into your lines.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors get it on a longer run.

- Mileage is what makes it a larger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors lubricated as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there.

In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that move the car.

## Scraptoft, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- Your location: a postcode beginning LE7 9 serves best.

- A road name is a help: Church Hill, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at The Co-operative Food, for example — and it is far easier to find.

- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your vehicle.

- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Scraptoft, and so tell us which.

- About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- If it has run, how far and how heavily — as well as if it's run at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that's quicker settled before our engineers get there than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Scraptoft fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Hold to these: well-intended help does the harm during the wait.

- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere unsafe? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Safe where it stands? Wait with it.

- No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the vehicle a short way.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.

- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is risky, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: your ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives

- The price comes after three questions, not before them — what got in, how much, and whether it's run — since those replies decide the job.

- Emptying it's how that mixture gets taken from that tank.

- The fuel lines are cleaned. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the lines are holding it.

- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it's changed; otherwise, cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.

- Starting up. Once your system is bled with new diesel, our engineers start the car and confirm it runs properly.

The vehicle has new diesel running through it before we go.

If it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual, and your car returns to normal use at once.

## Back on the road in Scraptoft after your fuel drain

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.

- Keep your documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
