# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Seabridge: What Happens Now

Not for a second, and not for moving it: the engine remains off. Pause there.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and no other factor settles that as much as the next few minutes do.

Here is the sequence of things from here, anywhere you're around Seabridge.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Work through the following in order, first.

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank towards the components it damages.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same mixture.

- Visibility comes before the rest beside moving traffic: put the hazard lights on, and only then think about everything else.

- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push it away from the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the way.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers that, and that is where our first question starts. Never bin it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M6, under a mile from Seabridge, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Stage one starts after that.

## Seabridge fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

If it has not once been started:

- That petrol is still in your tank and nowhere else.

- Usually it is emptied and flushed just where your car is.

- This is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

If it's been started, even for a second:

- Some petrol has left your tank already, passed through your filter, and reached the fuel lines.

- On a longer run it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- The job grows with the distance — lines cleaned, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

In your tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## Seabridge, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Get ready a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

- The best place to start is a postcode — one beginning ST5 3 — for where you have stopped.

- Name the road — Guernsey Drive or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.

- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, so say the landmark — such as the one at Lodeys Supermarket.

- Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Seabridge page.

- The amount: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- Settle who has the car ahead of when our technicians turn up: some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and doing it faster beforehand.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Seabridge fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.

- Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a few yards.

- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.

- A home-made drain leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky too.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: your ignition stays off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after the van gets there

- First, three questions: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers decide this job, so the quote follows them.

- Then the tank is emptied, so the tainted fuel is taken out.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond the tank sits in the lines once it ran, and your lines are rinsed to shift it.

- Then the filter: changed where there is a workable one, cleared where there's not.

- Clean diesel goes in, then the system is primed.

- Starting it. After your system is bled with clean diesel, we start the car and check it runs smoothly.

The vehicle has fresh diesel running through it before our engineers leave.

It's very rare for a vehicle spotted quickly to be left with permanent damage, and normal driving resumes straight away.

## Seabridge, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on new diesel, it asks nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over and call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep your documents.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
