# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Seaburn?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Seaburn and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Contact us so we will tell you what happens next before you do any more.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start it. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Never thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would sooner get to an awkward location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Prince's Avenue, switch the hazards on then keep the car there.

- The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts SR6 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you call.

- What got in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has started — these three replies determine your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning run labouring on a fuel that had shed a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting at the nearest station till the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the thing we put to you is about distance instead of hours. Call us. Leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

The work begins at the pump, generally. Regularly it ends at one as well.

The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the station's permission, that's somewhere our technicians work, and often.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the one setting this ends up spotted.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

The staff will usually help you move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing.

Starting the car over four car lengths? Not a chance.

The phone call our technicians want sounds like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now switched off outside Morrisons. What we're really asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Can our engineers reach your side of Seaburn?

Seaburn is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to it and to the villages around it on the usual journeys: South Bents, Fulwell, Roker, Whitburn and Monkwearmouth.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations in Tyne and Wear have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Contact us and check rather than assuming — borders above all, and wherever your satnav might get wrong.

Look at this map for the patch included on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory we serve, and none of that requires the car to come to us.

## Kerbside stops across Seaburn

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Kings Avenue because you realised after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Clear of your car when it isn't safe to wait there, with it if it is.

Never fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

A van driving to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than carrying on.

Three answers determine much of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the car in the car park at The Promenade. Then the polluted mixture comes out of your tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and your system primed, we start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before you set off.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then see below

under 10 miles from Seaburn, the local A194(M) is what matters now.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and don't start it to move it.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what we bring.

## Seaburn itself

Seaburn is a coastal suburban area in Tyne and Wear, situated near the city of Sunderland. Seaburn lies at a low elevation of around 6 metres, close to the sea and adjacent to nearby places such as South Bents and Fulwell. Seaburn has a population of approximately 2976 people, living in predominantly semi-detached housing. Seaburn is located about 2.3 miles from Sunderland and 242.3 miles from London.

## What our engineers do when our technicians reach you in Seaburn

- The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.

- We drain that tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to drive away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Seaburn is a different job

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Seaburn page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then phone us about the BMW 5 Series near Saint Andrew's.

## Seaburn costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank takes.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

No warning light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven once more before somebody rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Ford Fiesta is now resting near Fulwell Community Library. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of a motor failing. Turn off. Call us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Seaburn motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Seaburn?

Yes, and it's where a good share of this work takes place.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then leave the car off.

Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more commonly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## You, and the car, still together?

Leave it shut off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing wrongly fuelled motors, Seaburn and the rest of Tyne and Wear, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
