# Seafar: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: your engine remains off. Pause there.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a simple drain plus a flush, done right where your car stands, and what happens in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

Here is the sequence of things from now, anywhere you're in Seafar.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Before anything else, these — following this sequence.

- Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the fuel system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the parts it damages. Keep it off completely.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Near moving traffic? Then your hazards come on before anything else, so the car is easy to see.

- By hand, never under your engine: that's how it leaves the pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the distance.

- Hold on to your receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what we ask for first.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M80 at the next exit if that's where you are, under a mile from Seafar, and pull over somewhere safe and not pressing on to the services. Then begin at step one.

## Each Seafar fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

If it has never been started:

- The petrol remains inside the tank, and just there.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally all of it.

- No position is better, and it's why the first stage matters so much.

If your engine has run, even for a moment:

- The fuel lines and your filter now hold petrol pulled out of your tank.

- Your high-pressure pump and the injectors get it on a longer run.

- Distance is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that shift it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Seafar: what to have prepared

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning G67 1 is the ideal start.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Seafar Road, or wherever you have stopped.

- Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Tesco Extra, and it's easy.

- Make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Seafar page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either gives us how much.

- The miles it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and that's quicker settled before our engineers get there than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine too if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.

## The wait for a Seafar fuel drain, and what to do in it

During the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — which is why these matter.

- Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a few yards.

- None of that takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank remains where it is anyway.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: your ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

- The quote comes after three queries, not before them — what went in, how much, and if it has run — because the answers decide this job.

- Next your tank is drained, so the tainted fuel comes out.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond your tank sits in the fuel lines if it ran, and your lines are cleaned to clear it.

- Where your car has a usable filter, it's replaced; if not, cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, and the system is primed.

- Starting it. After the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel, our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly.

The vehicle has new diesel running through it before we head off.

Your car goes back to normal driving straight away, and permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted early.

## Seafar, after your fuel drain: back on the road

- After it's been started on clean fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Pull over and call us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Your documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.

## Leave it off and ring: petrol in a diesel across North Lanarkshire

Step one is the whole of it: motor off, keys out, receipt in your pocket. From there Petrol in Diesel carries on, at the forecourt, by the kerbside or on your driveway.
