# Seaside: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Seaside and the remainder of Carmarthenshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

One call our way will be enough: our team will tell you what follows after this. Do this right away.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which draws this petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.

- Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- We'd much rather drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on St. David's Close, that means hazards on and leave the car.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning SA15 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has started. These three replies determine the whole call-out.

## Draining petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

It begins at a pump, typically. Often enough the job ends there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that is normally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still untouched.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car sits.

The staff will generally offer to move the car out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing.

Firing it for four car lengths? Don't.

## Places we reach near Seaside

As a residential suburb, Seaside gets a regular call, while the areas close by go along on that same journey: Wern and Ty-isaf, Llanelli and Bigyn, Sandy.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations around Carmarthenshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Phone to ask instead of guessing — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav tends to get wrong.

This map marks the ground the page includes.

The car never needs to come to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it won't run, so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the catch, and it's why your diesel Peugeot 308 will have seemed entirely usual coming back from the local primary school. They always do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about, so nothing tells you. Phone with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

## Kerbside call-outs in Seaside

Some people get no sensible place to pull in at all.

If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge of Druce Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Whether you sit by your car or stand clear of it hangs on whether staying nearby looks wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky place, and that's no bother for us.

Simple job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai parked by The Cambrian with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so leave the car then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings and into the sump.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M4 comes into it — under 10 miles from Seaside.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart the vehicle to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the usual Crown Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## All about Seaside

Seaside is a coastal suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the city of Swansea and close to nearby places such as Wern and Llanelli. Seaside has a population of around 5116 people and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Seaside sits at a low elevation of 6 metres above sea level, reflecting its coastal setting. Seaside is located approximately 10 miles from Swansea and 173 miles from London.

## What our technicians do when we reach you in Seaside

- We check what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- Away comes the contaminated fuel.

- Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the issue.

- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- Once it's fired up, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to drive away.

We do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Rarely the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Sunday School, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Citroen C3 gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Seaside

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this problem beneath it is a different one altogether.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Seaside page. Both are ours to deal with.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Seaside

We can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, your idle turned lumpy, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is now sitting by Siloah Independent Chapel. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly not your engine packing up — and because there's no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven again before anyone calls. Do not. Turn it off then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Seaside drivers

## Fuel drains on a Seaside petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this happens.

Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable a lot more often than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.

Across Carmarthenshire and in Seaside: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
