# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Selby?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Selby or the rest of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

A single call to us will be sufficient: our team can tell you what follows after this. Do this straight away.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And having started, never trust it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner get to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on New Lane, turn your hazards on then keep it there.

- Our van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting YO8 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, about how much, plus if the engine has been run. The responses decide whatever follows.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

It starts at the pump, generally. Regularly the job wraps up at one too.

Still at BP? Then that's generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the single spot it ends up stopped.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The attendants will generally help you roll the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

## Areas our vans reach in Selby

Westfield, East Common, Brayton, Barlby, Thorpe Wood — every one of them on our trips that carry us out to Selby as well, a riverside town.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

On a boundary, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire rather than presuming.

That map shows the area the page includes.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Selby Abbey Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave your motor alone, and ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Mercedes C-Class or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a run taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

## Selby: stuck where you stopped

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in anywhere safe.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Gowthorpe since you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the normal kind.

Remain by the vehicle if it's sensible to wait there, but clear of the vehicle if it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

## Run it already? Stop, and see this

The M62 is the one that counts here, and it runs under 10 miles from Selby.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the run to Cholera Burial Ground, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Audi A6 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.

## Selby itself

Selby is a town situated on the banks of the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, with a low elevation of around 10 metres above sea level. Selby lies approximately 12 miles south of York and 162 miles north of London, making it a significant settlement in the region. Selby has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent, and the town is surrounded by nearby places such as Westfield, East Common, and Brayton. Selby has a population of around 16,667 people, according to recent estimates.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Selby

- The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- Our engineers empty that tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.

- After it is turned on, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Kuga parked close to Smithson Tennant hardly two streets on. Call us, then leave it off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Selby

Never start it: that opening rule applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal around Selby has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Unfamiliar places are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up by Market Place without thinking, in a diesel BMW X1 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone spots it, and distance is what settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Selby?

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what changes it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there safely?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Drain it then put clean diesel in — that's the advice you will get, normally from a person certain, and it is only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Peugeot 208 by Wetherells and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What occurs next is the trouble: the engine immediately draws the petrol left resting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush your circuit and take your filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the vehicle merely starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Selby motorists

## At a petrol station around Selby, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a good part of this work happens.

Often, provided the site agrees: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable far more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

Switched off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on.

A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists expect.

Mobile fuel draining in Selby and throughout North Yorkshire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
