# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Selsey? Don't Start It

Do not fire up the engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Selsey and the remainder of West Sussex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Contact us and then our team will explain what follows after that before you do anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those parts.

- Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We'd rather come to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on Lewis Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Our van showing up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting PO20 0, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you dial.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how many litres, and also whether the car has fired. Those three answers determine the entire job.

The journey in is what drew weakened diesel through your pump. Sitting still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Bognor Regis all day, rests harmless in that tank whilst it waits. Phone first — before your keys turn.

## Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where this work mostly starts, and where a big portion of it finishes.

The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the owner's agreement, that is somewhere we work, and often.

Nowhere except the forecourt can this be halted with the engine still cold.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the help.

Starting the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Parts we reach in Selsey

Selsey is a coastal town, and so our team get out to the town and to anywhere around it on those same runs: East Beach, Norton, Church Norton, Keynor Estate and Highleigh.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most towns around West Sussex have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

On the border, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Phone and check instead of assuming.

This map is the area this page includes.

Every bit of it is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Someone will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Medmerry Primary School is a nuisance; the same motor restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into your pump. Leave it, let them complain, then give us a call.

## Selsey: stuck where you parked

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull in.

Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge of Large Acres, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the car while it isn't safe to sit inside, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and moves off quite happily. Risk the journey home from The Neptune Inn? No. Ring us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it stands.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 15 miles out of Selsey, your Waterlooville Bypass is what matters now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are typically lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Out there fine, back gutless. If that was the run to Selsey Cricket Club., look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

## About Selsey

Selsey is a coastal town in West Sussex, situated on a low-lying peninsula with an average elevation of around 7 metres. Selsey lies approximately 7 miles south of Chichester and 60 miles from London, with its residents enjoying views of the English Channel. Selsey has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Selsey is close to several nearby places, including East Beach, Norton, and Church Norton.

## What our engineers do when we reach you in Selsey

- We establish what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Our engineers clear your tank of all the tainted mixture.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the problem.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- It's fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.

Then it's ready to set off.

There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Selsey

Never start it: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.

AdBlue removal around Selsey has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — close to Selsey Football And Social Club or anywhere at all. Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong.

## Selsey prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank takes.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Selsey

## I'm on a forecourt in Selsey. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Across West Sussex and around Selsey: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
