# Shade: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Shade and the rest of West Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Phone before everything else starts, so you will know what comes from there.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it. Started all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: turning it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into precisely those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and we would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Rochdale Road, turn the hazards on then leave the car there.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts OL14 6 — that's what settles whether the van shows up or circles.

- Three replies shape the whole job: the liquid you poured in, the rough volume of it, and if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning drive labouring on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Passat, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting at Todmorden until the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the question we put to you is about distance instead of time. Ring us. Keep the car precisely where it stands.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

Most of this job starts at the pump, so a good share of that ends up finished there.

Still at Shell? Then that is usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere except the forecourt can this be halted with your engine still untouched.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Worth it.

Cranking it over four car lengths? Don't.

Diesel Nissan Qashqai. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Morrisons. That's the call we want, since the real question under it is about quantity through your pump not hours on the clock.

## Places we cover around Shade

As a small village, Shade sees a routine visit, while the areas close by go along on the same run: Salford and Todmorden, Gauxholme and Knowl Wood, Millwood.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of places across West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Ring us to check instead of guessing — boundaries above all, and wherever your phone may struggle with.

Look at the map for the area shown on this page.

The vehicle does not need to move to us. We operate over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Shift the car out of that gateway and deal with it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by Shade Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, as priming happens with every start and more petrol goes past the filter towards the pump. Let people grumble. Give us a call.

## Shade: broken down wherever you pulled up

The opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everybody.

A routine call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge on Oak Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Out of the motor if it is not sensible to wait in it, by it if it is.

Don't fire it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into your fuel system.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no trouble for us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M62 comes in — under 10 miles away from Shade.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Do not start it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit then switch off.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring alters.

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us. Fine on the way out to Pollination Street, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol weakens diesel; runnier fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Peugeot 3008 went, the less of that pressure it held.

## Shade itself

Shade is a small locality in West Yorkshire, situated on the shores of a lake at an elevation of 190 metres. Shade lies within a short distance of several nearby towns, including Salford and Todmorden, and is approximately 15 miles from Bradford. Shade has a population of around 783 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Shade is located in a scenic area, with the landscape shaped by its lakeside setting.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Shade

- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Shade?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this issue beneath it's a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Shade page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Shade pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank holds.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

The fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got by Unitarian Church needs the circuit flushed rather than drained.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Shade drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Shade?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place.

Our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable a lot more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

The pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way.

This is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Throughout West Yorkshire and around Shade: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
