# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shaw Side?

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Shaw Side or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Contact us before anything else starts, and you will learn what follows next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start it. And if started, never believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition is left off too — turn it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.

- Don't water down it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Frederick Avenue, switch your hazards on then leave the car there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting OL2 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how many litres, and also if the car has run. Those three details shape your whole call-out.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

The job kicks off at the pump, generally. Often enough it ends on site too.

Still at Shell? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a forecourt, it gets halted with your motor never run, and no place else does that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

The staff will normally offer to push it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing.

Firing it just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Each start primes your fuel system and draws more of that blend out of that tank and toward the pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a roomier space has quietly become a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So if our technicians can't work alongside your diesel Volkswagen Passat, our technicians move it without starting it. None of that is fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Aldi our engineers visit all the time, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height bar at the way in deciding if our van can reach you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.

## Shaw Side and the villages beside it

Shaw Side is a residential suburb, and we are out to it and to the places around it on the usual journeys: Shaw Edge, Cowlishaw, Moss Hey, Luzley Brook and Shaw.

There are pages for most locations in Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come.

Guessing is the thing to resist, particularly on the boundary or anywhere your phone gets lost. Phone and enquire.

That map outlines the ground this page includes.

All of that is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.

## Broken down on the kerbside around Shaw Side

Not everyone gets a suitable place to pull in.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Sarah Street because you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of your car when it is not sensible to be there, beside it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

Carrying on causes your car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky location, and that's no trouble for us.

A diesel BMW 3 Series in the parking area outside Bulls Head with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till someone drives it home. Park the vehicle there overnight and ring us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates while it waits. What we will ask is if that run there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the oil.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Here is where the local A627(M) comes in — under 3 miles away from Shaw Side.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never start the vehicle to move it.

It alters what we bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Mercedes E-Class travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that drive to Memorial Gardens went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then call us.

## About Shaw Side

Shaw Side is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Beal and close to the Pennine foothills. Shaw Side has a mix of terraced housing and is located near several other local places, including Shaw Edge and Moss Hey. Shaw Side sits at an elevation of 192 metres, around 8.8 miles from Manchester city centre.

## Our visit around Shaw Side, step by step

- The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.

- Away flows the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- The system gets bled, on new diesel.

- The engine is started and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away.

There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Emptying the Audi A3, changing the filter where there's a workable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole system: that is the job, and it is shaped by the worst of that sitting in the fuel lines rather than in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Holy Trinity — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot we work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the problem. A narrow parking space beats a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shaw Side is a distinct job

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Shaw Side page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Shaw Side

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank takes.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the fuel filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 2008 that made it near Crompton Library wants its circuit flushed. Clearing isn't the same thing.

## Shaw Side drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Shaw Side, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's permission we attend Red Rose Filling Station and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with the car?

Never switch the engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect.

Clearing misfuelled vehicles, Shaw Side and the rest of Greater Manchester, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
