# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sheerwater: What Happens Now

Stop. Motor off. Leave it like that — no second on, no shifting it at all.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and nothing decides that as much as these next few minutes do.

Here is the sequence of things from here, anywhere you are around Sheerwater.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

In this sequence, all before anything else:

- Pull your keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the parts it damages, so leave the vehicle off wholly.

- Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the issue. It doesn't: nothing gets out, and that tank simply holds more of the same.

- Hazards on. If you are at all close to moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the attendants to help you roll the car away from the pump. Don't crank it to move it, however short the way.

- Keep the receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are written on it, and they're what our engineers ask about first.

On the M25, under 3 miles from Sheerwater, the next junction is the spot to leave the car; anywhere, the first safe location to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## Has it run yet? The fork in each Sheerwater fuel drain

One answer is what everything after this point depends on.

Engine not run at all?

- That petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.

- Normally it is drained and rinsed just where your car is.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

If your engine has been run, even briefly:

- From your tank, past your filter, into the lines: that's how far the petrol has travelled.

- Run it farther and the petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through the pump first.

- Lines flushed, the fuel filter dealt with, and sometimes more: the job grows as the miles does.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that is only waiting in a tank.

Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that shift it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Sheerwater: what to have ready

Whether the van goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Where you are. A postcode beginning GU21 5 is the best place to start.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that is Dartmouth Avenue or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one outside Asda, and it is easy.

- Say what your car is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Sheerwater, so say which.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and the way it was driven.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's go-ahead for the work, and sorting it before we arrive is faster than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, your car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works as well.

## Sheerwater fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

The wait is where kindly meant help does the damage. Stick to these.

- Wait with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.

- Anything from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank stays put regardless.

- Even your radio or your windows are not worth turning your ignition on for.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once the van gets there

- Fuel, volume, whether it has run: those answers decide this job, and that is why we give a price after them rather than before.

- Next the tank is cleared, and the polluted fuel is taken out.

- The fuel lines are cleaned. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond the tank, and your lines are holding it.

- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it's swapped; if not, cleared.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- The first start on clean diesel. When priming is finished, the motor is started and our engineers check that it runs smoothly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our engineers head off.

The vehicle returns to normal use at once, and permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving in Sheerwater again

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and call us back.

- Your documents covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
