# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sheffield Park

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Sheffield Park or the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us before all else starts, so you will know what happens from there.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Never start the car. Started all the same? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol car typically can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those components.

- Do not thin it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A motor that has never moved is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Warley Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Before you phone, get your location. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning S2 1 — that is what decides whether the van arrives or circles.

- What was put in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has fired — these three answers settle your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning commute running on a fluid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left standing at Sheffield till it dawns on you close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a good deal, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about miles not hours. Phone us. Keep the car right where it sits.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job usually starts, and where a large portion of it ends.

The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at City Road Service Station? Given the site's permission, that's a place we work, and often.

No place except a forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still unrun.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Roll it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Asda now. Time gone by isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Areas we serve in Sheffield Park

As a residential suburb, Sheffield Park has a routine visit, while the areas round about go along on that same trip: Arbourthorne and The Manor, Manor Park and Deep Pit, Wybourn.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all places in South Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Ring us to check instead of presuming, particularly where you are on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

Check our map for the area shown on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of it needs the car to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. The Nissan Qashqai will have felt entirely usual on the way back from Manor Lodge Community Primary and Nursery School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Sheffield Park: stranded wherever you pulled up

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everybody.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on St Aidan's Road because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it's the ordinary kind.

Wait with the vehicle if it is sensible to wait in it, and clear of the car when it isn't.

Never restart your motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mix further into your fuel system.

However awkward the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the car than driving on.

## Run it already? Stop, and see below

under 5 miles out of Sheffield Park, the local M1 is what matters now.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to move it. Come off at the next safe junction then switch off.

Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring differs.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and phone us. Happy on the way out to Norfolk Heritage Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel BMW 1 Series drove, the less of that pressure it held.

## Sheffield Park itself

Sheffield Park is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Sheffield, near the River Don, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Sheffield Park sits at an elevation of 146 metres, close to the city centre and surrounded by other residential areas such as Arbourthorne and The Manor. Sheffield Park is connected to the wider region by its proximity to Sheffield, which is just 1.2 miles away. Sheffield Park has a population of around 5380 people, living in a predominantly terraced housing environment.

## The visit around Sheffield Park, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- That tank is drained completely.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

## A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sheffield Park

The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Sheffield Park page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Bethel United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better location.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Sheffield Park

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel in Sheffield Park

## I am on a forecourt in Sheffield Park. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A big portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
