# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sherington? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Sherington and the rest of Buckinghamshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

One ring our way is plenty: our engineers can explain what happens from here. Make it first.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the vehicle. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd place suits us better than a started diesel.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting MK16 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has been started. The responses decide whatever comes after.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A big part of the work is done at a forecourt, since that's where it usually begins.

Still at BP? Then that's normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the single spot the mistake is stopped.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Well worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four car lengths? No.

## Sherington plus the towns beside it

Sherington is a rural village, and so our vans get out to the town and to the areas near it on the same runs: Chicheley, Lathbury, Filgrave, Newport Pagnell and Tyringham.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places across Buckinghamshire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to resist, above all on the border or somewhere your satnav struggles. Call us and ask.

The ground this page includes sits on our map.

Your vehicle never needs to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Each restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter and into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Dacia Duster on the zig-zags outside Sherington Church of England School is a hassle, whereas the same vehicle fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Leave it there, let people complain, and ring us.

## Sherington: stuck where you parked

The chance to stop anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Water Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Okay there? Wait with it. Not fine? Get out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

However awkward the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

Easy job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 3008 left outside The White Hart with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the car then phone us once it's light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can work past the rings then into the sump.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the local M1 matters, under 3 miles from Sherington.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, as a diesel BMW 1 Series left at Sherington Sports & Recreation Ground is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where is Sherington?

Sherington is a village in north Buckinghamshire, situated near the border with Bedfordshire, and lies approximately 5 miles from Milton Keynes. Sherington sits in a low-lying area at around 65 metres above sea level, surrounded by rolling countryside and nearby villages such as Chicheley and Lathbury. Sherington has a population of around 985 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Sherington

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- The motor is turned on and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Sherington?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never crank it — but the fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Sherington page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not sloppy — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up by Sherington Village Hall that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Sherington?

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank takes.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the confident advice you will get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Kia Sportage close to St Laud's and it'll start, which is precisely why the tip sounds reasonable. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries around Sherington

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Sherington?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place.

Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than people assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that.

A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers fear.

Throughout Buckinghamshire and around Sherington: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
