# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shilton? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Shilton or the remainder of Warwickshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our engineers shall explain what the following stage will be. Contact us — it goes ahead of everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That's why you don't crank it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition alone.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Wood Lane? Hazards on, then leave it there. An odd place works for us better than a started diesel.

- Before you call, gather your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning CV7 9 — that's what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, about how many litres, and if your car has been started. Your answers decide everything that follows.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Most of this job begins at the pump, so a large part of that gets completed there.

If you are still on the forecourt at Asda, that's normally where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the one place it ends up stopped.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car sits.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving the car four bays doesn't warrant firing it.

The complicated part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides if a van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Co-op Food, mention how much room there is around you and which way round your car is. Those we attend regularly. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel Peugeot 308, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend departs that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have gradually made a bigger job of what was simply a motor sitting still.

## Service near Shilton

Barnacle, Ansty, Hopsford, Bulkington, Bramcote Mains — each of them on the rounds that take us out to Shilton itself, a rural village.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns in Warwickshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Ring us and ask rather than guessing, above all where you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

The ground this page covers is on this map.

The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck at the kerbside in Shilton

Not everyone gets the chance to stop somewhere suitable.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Ash Tree Grove because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Remain with your car when it is sensible to wait in it, yet out of the car when it isn't.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

A van driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's far better for your car than pressing on.

Never risk it. The drive home from Shilton Arms is quite possible, which is precisely the problem — a thinned tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the components your fuel is meant to lubricate. Call us, and let the Ford Focus stay where it is.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

This is where the M69 matters, under a mile out of Shilton.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It alters what our engineers bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it flows through — that is the full mechanism. It explains the normal Ansty Golf Centre call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Shilton itself

Shilton is a small village in Warwickshire, situated approximately 5 miles east of Coventry and 85 miles northwest of London. Shilton sits in a low-lying area at an elevation of around 111 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Barnacle, Ansty, and Hopsford. Shilton has a population of around 582 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## What we do when we get to you around Shilton

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- We clear your tank of all the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shilton

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Shilton page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel BMW 1 Series close to St Andrew. You will not know how full your tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out on site all the same. Our engineers ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Shilton?

What changes the price is laid out below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Kia Sportage is parked up by St James. The motor isn't failing — that deadness is fuel that will not build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours normally get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Shilton motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Shilton?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Never switch it on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
