# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shoreham Beach

With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Shoreham Beach and the rest of West Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Phone before everything else happens, so you will see what comes next.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd sooner come to a tricky place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Ferry Road, turn your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Before you call, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts BN43 5 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.

- Three details settle the whole call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the ballpark amount of it, plus if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

A big portion of this work ends up completed at the pump, because that is where it usually kicks off.

Still at Texaco? Then that is typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

No place but the forecourt can it be halted with your engine still untouched.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where your car sits.

The attendants will usually help you push it out from the pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane in Shoreham Beach and you're now sat outside Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, phone. Never crank it a second time to leave that bay. Our technicians will head your way, empty the tank, flush the fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little of it, which is why these are often the easy cases.

## Shoreham Beach and the villages beside it

These same journeys carry us to Shoreham-by-Sea, Kingston by Sea, Old Shoreham, Southwick and South Lancing as well as Shoreham Beach, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places around West Sussex, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

Contact us and ask rather than presuming, especially when you're on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles with.

This map is the area this page covers.

Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the car does not need to come to us.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Shoreham Beach Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone. Three miles in the Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a rushed morning dash demands plenty.

## Shoreham Beach: stuck wherever you stopped

Some drivers have no sensible place to stop at all.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge on Riverside, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of your car while it is not safe to sit inside, with it if it is.

Never start it up to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system.

A van driving to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Here is what a job in the car park at The Waterside usually looks like. Our engineers arrive at your car, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three replies decide much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then our engineers fire it up, confirm it runs smoothly, and you drive away.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the M23 comes in — under 25 miles away from Shoreham Beach.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

## Shoreham Beach itself

Shoreham Beach is a coastal suburban area in West Sussex, situated near the mouth of the River Adur and adjacent to Shoreham-by-Sea. Shoreham Beach lies at a low elevation of around 2 metres, with the majority of its housing stock comprising flats. Shoreham Beach is close to the city of Brighton and Hove, and is also near the smaller settlements of Kingston by Sea and Old Shoreham.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Shoreham Beach

- The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- What is left in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- When it is turned on, our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Shoreham Beach

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not start it — yet this issue isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system depends on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Shoreham Beach has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Seat Leon telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Shoreham War Memorial or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better place.

## Shoreham Beach pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the blend goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Citroen Berlingo that made it close to Captain Henry Roberts wants its system cleared. Draining isn't the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Shoreham Beach

## Fuel drains on a Shoreham Beach petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more commonly than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened.

The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Shoreham Beach and throughout West Sussex.
