# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Short Heath? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Short Heath or the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us and then our technicians can show you what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Do not start the vehicle — and don't believe it if it runs. That is the thing drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for several miles. It isn't okay. It's grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.

- Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Church Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Before you call, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning WV12 5 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has been turned over. Your answers settle everything that happens next.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job often kicks off, and where a fair portion of that closes.

We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at J.N.D. Total Economy that is normally where this drain happens.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with the motor never started, and no place else manages that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will usually help you wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of that mix out of that tank and towards your pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a nicer space has silently become a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So where our technicians cannot work alongside the diesel BMW 3 Series, our engineers shift it without running it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food we attend frequently, and the fuel is hardly ever the awkward part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the way in deciding if a van reaches you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the car points.

## Will our technicians cover your corner of Short Heath?

Short Heath is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to it and to the villages near it on the same trips: Lane Head, New Invention, Ashmore Lake, Dudleys Fields and Leamore.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in West Midlands, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Ring us and check rather than guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere your phone may get wrong.

The map marks the patch the page spans.

Your vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Shift it out of that gateway and deal with it later — that is what someone will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags outside Woodlands Academy of Learning, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Started three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past your filter toward your pump. Let everyone moan. Ring us.

## Broken down on the roadside in Short Heath

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable.

Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Pimbury Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay by the motor or step away from it hangs on whether sitting nearby seems sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

We'll send our van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for your car that is a lot better than driving on.

Simple job, this one — till someone drives it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class left at Duke of Cambridge with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave it then call us once it is light. Expect a question about the drive there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the rings then into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled

under a mile from Short Heath, the local M6 is what matters here.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and never start the car to reposition.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the run to The United Kingdom Inn Beer Garden, look at that tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Audi A3 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

## About Short Heath

Short Heath is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Tame and close to the city of Wolverhampton. Short Heath has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and it is located about 156 metres above sea level. Short Heath is part of the larger West Midlands conurbation, but retains a distinct character as a residential area with nearby amenities like Ashmore Lake. Short Heath is also close to other local places, including Lane Head and New Invention.

## When we get to you in Short Heath: what we do

- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- Away comes the polluted mixture.

- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is remaining in your system isn't what caused the issue.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed your system.

- After it's fired up, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Short Heath?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the problem underneath it's a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Short Heath page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Short Heath

We can't put one number on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank holds.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

If it's not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got near The Hive Hub needs your circuit flushed, not cleared.

## Short Heath motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Short Heath?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done.

Our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never switch the engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining wrongly fuelled vehicles, Short Heath and the rest of West Midlands, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
