# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Shotts? Don't Start It

Never start your engine. If the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Shotts and the rest of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Our team will show you what the next part will be. Call us — this happens before everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Don't fire it up — and don't depend on it when it fires up. This is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It's not fine. It is grinding your fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Currieside Avenue, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never moved.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts ML7 4 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been turned over. Those replies shape everything that happens next.

Do not drive it home. The drive in has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Passat, and the trip back would close to double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that is easier. We don't need you hovering over your car at the nearest station while our engineers get on, and our team would much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where the work usually begins, and where a fair part of that ends.

The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere we work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the single place the mistake can be stopped before your engine has started.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four bays does not merit firing the engine.

We are in car parks like the one at Co-op Food a lot, and it's rarely the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the way in, which determines whether a technician gets to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way your car is facing. If there is no space to work beside the Skoda Octavia, we move it without the motor. That is not pedantry over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a car shifted twice for a roomier spot is silently a harder job than one no one touched.

## Shotts and the places near it

Shotts is a village, and our team go out to the town and to anywhere around it on those same rounds: Calderhead, Dykehead, Burnbrae, Stane and Torbothie.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for most places around North Lanarkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Presuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Ring us to ask.

That map shows the area the page includes.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the car never needs to move to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. The Nissan Qashqai will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol vehicle usually won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Shotts: stuck where you parked

Some drivers have no sensible spot to stop at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Regal Grove because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Sit with your car if it's safe to sit in it, and out of the car when it is not.

Don't start it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system.

Our van coming to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M8 counts, under 3 miles out of Shotts.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

## Where is Shotts?

Shotts is a village in North Lanarkshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 218 metres. Shotts lies approximately 17 miles east of Glasgow and 334 miles north of London, with nearby villages including Calderhead, Dykehead, and Burnbrae. Shotts has a population of around 1390 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Shotts is characterized by its rural riverside setting, with the village expanding along the riverbanks.

## When our technicians arrive with you in Shotts: what we do

- We check what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- We clear that tank of all the contaminated fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.

- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.

- When it is fired up, we make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Shotts?

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Shotts page. Both are ours to deal with.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your wrongly fuelled BMW 5 Series, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to Shotts Calderhead-Erskine Parish, then leave the restarting alone.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Shotts

What moves the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it close to Shotts Community Education Centre needs your system cleared, not emptied.

## Shotts motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt around Shotts. Can you drain it here?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine turned off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled cars, Shotts and the rest of North Lanarkshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
