# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Singleton? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Singleton and the rest of West Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Call us so our engineers will tell you what follows after that before you try much else.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and never believe it when it runs. Here is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.

- Do not put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the simplest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on The Leys? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.

- Before you call, get your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning PO18 0 — that is what determines whether our van shows up or circles.

- What got in, approximately how much, and also if the motor has started — these three details determine the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the drive in, and the penny drops close to eleven — by then the diesel Renault Megane has been parked outside Chichester for three hours. Phone us and keep the car exactly where it is. The run in is the bit that counts here, as diesel has two roles on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it burns it protects its high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with your pump working on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is made for — which is why the question we ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been parked.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work starts at the pump, so a good part of that gets finished there.

The drain generally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's permission, that is somewhere we work, and often.

The forecourt is the only location it is halted before the motor has fired.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Move the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting it just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

We'll come to you, empty that tank, clean those fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel Volkswagen Passat around Singleton and you're stranded outside Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and never start the vehicle once more to exit the space. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any diesel, so these tend to be the straightforward cases.

## Singleton plus the villages near it

Those same journeys carry us to Charlton, West Dean, East Dean, Cocking and Chilgrove along with Singleton, which is a village.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of locations around West Sussex have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Presuming is the habit to avoid, especially on the boundary or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us to enquire.

That map shows the patch the page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we cover, and none of that needs your car to travel to us.

You will be told to shift the car clear of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by Singleton CofE Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the filter toward your pump. Let them moan. Ring us.

## Singleton: stuck wherever you stopped

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on The Grove since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Whether you remain with the car or move clear of it turns on if being nearby feels sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

We will send the van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for your car that is a lot better than carrying on.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under 15 miles from Singleton, your A3(M) is what counts now.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and don't start it to reposition.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in our van.

Fine on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how that drive to Levin Down Clump went, the tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the precision parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further the BMW 5 Series went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

## Singleton itself

Singleton is a small village in West Sussex, situated on the banks of the River Lavant, with a relatively low elevation of 62 metres. Singleton is surrounded by nearby villages such as Charlton, West Dean, and East Dean, and is located close to the city of Chichester. Singleton has a population of approximately 518 residents, who mostly live in semi-detached houses. Singleton is also within commuting distance to London, being around 49 miles away.

## What happens when our engineers reach you in Singleton

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- That tank gets cleared completely.

- Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what created the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught early, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Singleton is a separate matter

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Singleton page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Singleton

One figure wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Drain it and put new diesel in — that is the advice you will get, generally from somebody sure of themselves, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Skoda Superb near St. Margaret’s Church and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What happens next is the issue: the motor immediately sucks the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take your filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being repaired and the vehicle merely starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Singleton motorists

## Fuel drains on a Singleton petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable far more regularly than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers fear.

Throughout West Sussex and in Singleton: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
