# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Skea?

Do not start your engine. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Skea and the rest of County Fermanagh, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

One ring to us is plenty: we will explain what comes from here. Make this first.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those components.

- Do not thin it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would sooner come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Crown Street, switch the hazards on and leave it there.

- Before you call, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting BT92 2 — that is what determines whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has run. Those three details shape the entire job.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at the nearest station since this morning? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the trip in that pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Phone before you move the car.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big part of the job ends up completed at a pump, because that's where it mostly starts.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets caught with the motor never run, and no place else does it.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving the car four lengths does not merit cranking the motor.

Car parks like the one at the local shops are a spot we work in often, and your fuel is rarely the awkward part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height bar on the way in that determines whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. When we cannot work next to the diesel Mercedes C-Class we will move the car without firing it — and that's not fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Every start primes the fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of the tank and on to your pump, and so a car moved twice into a better bay has gradually become a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Coverage in Skea

Arney, Bellanaleck, Drumlaghy, Macken, Letterbreen — each of these on the rounds that carry us across to Skea itself, a small village.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across County Fermanagh, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Phone and ask instead of guessing, particularly where you are on a boundary or anywhere your phone struggles with.

Look at this map for the patch shown on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of it asks your car to travel to us.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere in Skea?

Not everyone gets a sensible place to stop.

Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Rock Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Fine right there? Sit by it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Your Audi A3 remains where it is in the car park by the pub in the village for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First we ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since, because much of the work rests on those answers. The tank is emptied of the tainted mix, the fuel lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and your system primed, the car is fired up and tested, and once it is running properly you pull away.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The M77 is the road that counts now, and sits over 50 miles from Skea.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and do not start the car to move it.

Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

## About Skea

Skea is a locality in County Fermanagh, situated inland at an elevation of 57 metres, and is located near the communities of Arney, Bellanaleck, and Drumlaghy. Skea is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is home to a population of around 805 people. Skea sits within the wider region of Northern Ireland, approximately 41 miles from the city of Armagh and 368 miles from London.

## What follows when our technicians reach you in Skea

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.

- Away flows the polluted fuel.

- Our technicians clean the lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system is not what started the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Skea is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — never start the car — but the fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

AdBlue removal around Skea has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Ford Kuga near a street just off the centre. You will not know how full your tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site anyway. We ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Skea

One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain the vehicle then put fresh diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 close to the far end of the built-up part and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through the pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Call us. Your system gets cleaned, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that merely starts.

## Skea motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Skea petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is fixable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Don't turn it on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
