# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Slack Side?

Do not start your engine. While the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Slack Side and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

One call our way is sufficient: our engineers will show you what comes after this. Do that straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the car. And having started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Switching your ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Thorncroft Road, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BD6 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.

- What went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has run — those three details decide the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

Most of this job begins at a pump, so a good chunk of that gets done at one.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Texaco that's normally where the drain gets done.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the only location it ends up caught.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our technicians deal with it where your car is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Move it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting it four lengths does not warrant firing the motor.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off outside Co-op Food now. Time elapsed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## Parts we cover near Slack Side

Those same trips bring us to Beldon Hill, Wibsey Slack, Buttershaw, Pickles Hill and Haycliffe Hill as well as Slack Side, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for most places in West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing about if we come.

Assuming is the habit to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Call us to ask.

The patch the page covers appears on the map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our engineers work on, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

## Stranded by the kerbside in Slack Side

Not everybody has a suitable spot to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Enfield Walk, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay with the car if it is wise to be in it, yet clear of the car when it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Our van coming to an awkward spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

## Run it already? Pull in, and check this

This is where your M606 counts, under 3 miles from Slack Side.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the next safe junction then switch off.

Long drive? Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That's the full process, and it accounts for the ordinary Wibsey Community Garden call: a diesel Audi A4 that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

## A little about Slack Side

Slack Side is a suburban area located near Bradford in West Yorkshire, sitting at an elevation of 269 metres. Slack Side forms part of the larger urban landscape surrounding Bradford, with nearby places including Beldon Hill and Wibsey Slack. Slack Side is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, typical of many suburban areas in the region.

## When our technicians get to you in Slack Side: what we do

- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.

- Your tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- We put fresh diesel in and prime the system.

- It's run with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Three things help when you ring from close to Faizan E Raza Masjid: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, so the location itself is rarely the trouble — we'd far rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Ford Focus, change the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the entire circuit, as by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines instead of in the tank.

## Slack Side AdBlue removal is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't crank it — yet this problem is not.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Slack Side page. Both are ours to handle.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our technicians work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 by Wibsey Cenotaph.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Slack Side?

What shifts the price is laid out below, since the job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the tip you will get, normally from a person sure of themselves, and it is half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Hyundai Tucson close to St Aidan and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound plausible. What occurs next is the issue: the engine at once pulls the petrol left sitting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush your circuit and take your filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and your car just starting.

## Slack Side motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt around Slack Side. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work happens.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Never turn the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Slack Side and across West Yorkshire.
