# Slyfield: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the vehicle off.

Drained then cleaned, right where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple depends on the minutes to come far more than on anything else.

From now on, in order, for anywhere in Slyfield:

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this sequence, and before anything else:

- Take your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the parts it harms, so keep the vehicle off completely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only makes you with extra of the same blend.

- Near passing traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before everything else, so the vehicle is simple to see.

- However short the distance, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. At a forecourt, roll it clear of the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to help.

- The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the till receipt says both. Hold on to it.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M25 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 10 miles from Slyfield, and pull over somewhere safe instead of pressing on to the services. Then begin at step one.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Slyfield fuel drain

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

If it has not once been started:

- Nowhere but the tank: that is where that petrol still is.

- Usually it is emptied and cleaned just where your car is.

- No place is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

If the motor has run, even for a moment:

- Petrol has been drawn from your tank, past your filter and into the fuel lines.

- Run it farther and the petrol reaches your injectors, having passed through your fuel pump first.

- Mileage is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it runs through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there.

A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing.

The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Slyfield: what our technicians need

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

- The ideal place to start is a postcode — one beginning GU1 1 — for where you have stopped.

- A road name helps: Moorfield Point, say, or whatever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Aldi, and it is straightforward.

- The vehicle. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Slyfield page.

- The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- The distance it did, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise the work, and that's easier settled before our technicians turn up than after.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## The wait for a Slyfield fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where well-meant help does the damage. Hold to these.

- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.

- A DIY drain leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky too.

- Leave your ignition off — the windows and your radio too.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one stage at a time

- First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies shape the job, so our quote follows them.

- That tank is emptied. The tainted blend comes from the tank.

- Purging your lines comes next, since a motor that ran has petrol past the tank, inside your lines themselves.

- Cleared, or changed if the car has a workable one: the filter is seen to next.

- The system is primed with clean diesel.

- Our engineers fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the system, then make sure that it is running correctly.

Only when it is running on new diesel do our technicians leave.

It's very rare for a vehicle spotted soon to be left with long-term damage, and normal driving resumes right away.

## Slyfield, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on clean diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Hold on to the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
