# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southdown

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Southdown and the remainder of Somerset. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Our engineers can explain what the following step will be. Call us — this goes before anything else.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And if started, do not believe it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so never add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather come to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Mount View, switch the hazards on then leave the car there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts BA2 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- Three answers decide the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the rough measure involved, and whether it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

It begins at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often it ends at one too.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Sainsbury's that is typically where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, it gets stopped with the engine never fired, and nowhere else manages it.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car is.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Nissan Qashqai, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Co-op Food now. Time gone by is not the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Southdown and the towns beside it

Whiteway, Kingsway, The Oval, South Twerton, Rush Hill — all of those on our journeys that bring us out to Southdown itself, a residential suburb.

We do come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Somerset, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Contact us to ask rather than guessing, particularly if you are on a border or anywhere your phone can't find.

This map marks the area this page covers.

Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Each restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags at Roundhill Primary School is a hassle, while the same car started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Leave it there, let everyone moan, and ring us.

## Stopped by the roadside somewhere around Southdown?

Not everyone gets a decent place to pull in.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge on Alderley Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Okay right there? Remain by it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the spot, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the parking area at Trowbridge House with a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight and call us next morning. Nothing worsens as it sits. What our technicians will ask about is if that trip there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can get past the rings then into the engine oil.

## Driven it already? Stop, then read below

The local M4 is the one which matters now, and lies under 10 miles from Southdown.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the car to reposition.

It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

Here's the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the normal Roundhill call — a diesel Peugeot 3008, out there without a murmur and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was engineered about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where's Southdown?

Southdown is a suburban area located near the city of Bath in Somerset, sitting at an elevation of around 115 metres. Southdown is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Whiteway and Kingsway. Southdown is also near The Oval and is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bath. Southdown has a population of approximately 7331 residents.

## Once our technicians reach you around Southdown: what happens

- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- Our engineers empty your tank of the tainted fuel.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that caused the trouble.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running correctly.

That has the car ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left your diesel BMW 5 Series up near St Barnabas a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave the vehicle off. The short drive genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our engineers clean the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Southdown is a different problem

The issue isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Southdown has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

## Southdown prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians can't put one price on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

## Southdown motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Southdown, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians visit Gulf and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way.

This is recoverable from far more often than motorists expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Southdown and across Somerset.
