# Southend: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Southend and the remainder of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Ring us and we will explain what follows from here before you do anything else.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you don't crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off too — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Marlborough Road, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Have your location ready before you phone. A postcode that starts SN8 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the car has fired. These three details determine the whole call-out.

Ring us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and it outside Bedwyn ever since? Then the afternoon has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any damage happened on the drive in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Plenty of this job begins at the pump, so a large share of that ends up finished at one.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at Esso that's generally where the drain happens.

The forecourt is the single setting this gets stopped before your engine has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Very much worth it.

Starting the car just for four car lengths? Don't.

## Can our engineers reach your end of Southend?

Southend is a rural hamlet, and so we are out to the town and to anywhere near it on those same runs: Ogbourne St George, Ogbourne St Andrew, Ogbourne Maizey, Woodsend and Rockley.

There are pages for most towns around Wiltshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

On a border, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.

The ground the page covers appears on this map.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our technicians cover, and none of it requires the vehicle to move to us.

Twenty to nine. By Ogbourne CofE Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

## Stuck on the kerb anywhere in Southend?

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe doesn't fall to everybody.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of A346 since you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Fine where you are? Wait by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

Never start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system.

However awkward the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The M4 is the one which matters now, and sits under 5 miles from Southend.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then switch off.

On a longer run — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what we bring.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Coronation Garden, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.

## Where is Southend?

Southend is a small hamlet in Wiltshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 143 metres. Southend lies near the villages of Ogbourne St George, Ogbourne St Andrew, and Ogbourne Maizey, and is approximately 27 miles from the city of Salisbury. Southend has a population of around 531 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Southend is also within commuting distance of London, being around 68 miles to the southwest of the capital.

## Our visit around Southend, step by step

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Our engineers clear your tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that caused the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- We start it and make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Southend?

Never start it: that first instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system relies on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Southend page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that is a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong. Don't restart it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, near St George or anywhere else.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Southend

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Volkswagen Polo near Ogbourne St Andrew and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through your pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets cleaned, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed vehicle from one that merely starts.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Southend motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Southend?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: Smiths of Axford, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more often than motorists expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Is the car still with you?

Never switch the engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

Clearing wrongly fuelled vehicles, Southend and the rest of Wiltshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
