# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southrop?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Southrop and the remainder of Oxfordshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Call us before all else starts, so you'll learn what happens from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And having started, never depend on it: your fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which moves this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.

- Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd much rather come to an odd place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Southrop Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Before you call, work out your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting OX15 5 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how many litres, and also if the motor has started. These three details shape the whole call-out.

Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the way in. Somewhere around eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Banbury for three hours. Call us then leave the vehicle where it sits. What is key is the drive in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — lubricates your pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles ran your pump on a liquid robbed of a lot of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the request to leave your keys be until our technicians get there.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, usually. Quite often the work ends there as well.

We work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you are still at Shell that is typically where this drain happens.

At a garage, this gets stopped with the engine never started, and nowhere else does that.

Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

The attendants will normally help you wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Firing it for four car lengths? Never.

## Places we reach around Southrop

The same trips carry us to Hook Norton, Down End, Scotland End, East End and Swerford besides Southrop, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations in Oxfordshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing about whether we come.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, above all on the border or somewhere the satnav fails. Phone to ask.

This map shows the area this page spans.

The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it will not run, and so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. That is the snag, and it is why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly usual coming back from Hook Norton Church of England Primary School. They always do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, and so nothing warns you. Phone us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

## Stranded at the roadside in Southrop

Not everyone finds a sensible spot to stop.

Set off, then realised? Ended up on the verge of Bury Croft Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit with your car if it is wise to wait inside, yet out of the car if it is not.

Don't fire up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system.

However difficult the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M40 comes into it — under 10 miles from Southrop.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and do not start it to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring alters.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the run to Hook Norton cutting, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the close clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel BMW 5 Series covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.

## Southrop itself

Southrop is a suburban area in Oxfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 153 metres, approximately 19 miles from Oxford and 67 miles from London. Southrop is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Southrop sits near other local places such as Hook Norton, Down End, and Scotland End, and is home to a population of around 1989 residents.

## Our job in Southrop, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Our technicians empty the tank of the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running smoothly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Draining the Audi A6, changing the filter where there is a serviceable one, rinsing your lines, putting clean fuel through the whole system: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in your lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Saint Peter — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and so the spot itself is seldom the problem. A narrow parking space trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Southrop

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Southrop page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that is a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Do not start the vehicle to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, close to Hook Norton Library or anywhere else.

## Southrop pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Southrop drivers

## Fuel drains on a Southrop petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the car switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Call-out fuel draining in Southrop and throughout Oxfordshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
