# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southwell? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Southwell and the remainder of Nottinghamshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Call us and our team can explain what follows next before you try any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And once started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off also — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.

- Never water down it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd sooner get to an awkward place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Church Street, turn the hazards on and keep it there.

- Have your position ready before you call. A postcode beginning NG25 0 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and the van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, plus if your car has run. Those three answers settle the full visit.

## Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

The job kicks off at the pump, usually. Quite often it finishes there too.

The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's agreement, that is a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the one location it is stopped before your engine has fired.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

The attendants will normally happily wheel the car out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing.

Starting it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

## Coverage around Southwell

Being a riverside town, Southwell gets a routine call, whilst its neighbours nearby go with it on the same trip: High Town and Easthorpe, Westhorpe and Normanton, Maythorne.

There are dedicated pages for most towns across Nottinghamshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come.

Near the border, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Call us to enquire instead of assuming.

Check our map for the patch covered here.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers serve, and none of it requires the car to come to us.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a frantic morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside Lowe's Wong Infant School, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone us.

## Stuck by the roadside anywhere in Southwell?

Some drivers get no safe place to pull over at all.

Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Market Place, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Wait by your car if it's sensible to be inside, and out of it when it's not.

Do not restart it to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the fuel system.

However difficult the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than driving on.

What we will want to know is if that trip there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and anything that doesn't burn can get past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the car park outside The Crown Hotel holding a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing deteriorates whilst it waits, and so park it there overnight and call us next morning.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 15 miles out of Southwell, your M1 is what matters here.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that is safe, stop there, and don't start the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it flows through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the entire process, and it explains the ordinary Higgons Mead call: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built round. None of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## Southwell itself

Southwell is a town in Nottinghamshire, situated on the River Greet at an elevation of around 43 metres. Southwell lies approximately 11.7 miles northeast of Nottingham and 114 miles north of London, with nearby villages including High Town, Easthorpe, and Westhorpe. Southwell has a population of around 7405 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Southwell is a riverside town with a mix of old and new buildings, reflecting its history and development over time.

## The visit around Southwell, step by step

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Away comes the contaminated fuel.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in your system is not what started the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Phoning from close to Southwell Methodist Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself hardly counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow bay than a motor a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Mercedes E-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Southwell?

Do not fire it up: that first instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Southwell has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres resting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra by Southwell Library.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Southwell?

What changes the price is listed below, as this job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Southwell

## I am on a forecourt around Southwell. Can you drain it here?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians work at Gulf and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with the vehicle?

Never turn your engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers fear.

Throughout Nottinghamshire and around Southwell: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
