# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Spencers Wood

Don't start the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Spencers Wood and the rest of Berkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Our technicians shall tell you what your next move will be. Call us — it happens ahead of everything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Never start the car. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that confused. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we'd rather drive to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Basingstoke Road, turn the hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode beginning RG7 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, about how much, and if the motor has been turned over. The responses determine all that follows.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the work often kicks off, and where a fair part of that finishes.

We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, so if you're still at Murco that is usually where this drain happens.

Before the engine has run — a garage is the only spot this is halted.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the help.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Diesel Skoda Octavia. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Lidl. That's the call we want, since the real question underneath it's about quantity through your pump not hours on the clock.

## Service near Spencers Wood

As a rural village, Spencers Wood has a regular visit, and the areas nearby come along on the same trip: Three Mile Cross and Ryeish Green, Grazeley and Great Lea Common, Swallowfield.

There are separate pages for nearly all places in Berkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing at all about if our technicians come.

Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on the boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Phone to ask.

Look at our map for the patch shown here.

Every bit of that is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Lambs Lane Primary School. They all do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while your high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing warns you, since from behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about. Ring us with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.

## Spencers Wood: broken down where you pulled up

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Chapel Lane since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you remain beside the motor or keep clear of it hangs on if being nearby seems wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward spot, and that is no problem for us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Your M4 is the road which matters now, and runs under 3 miles from Spencers Wood.

A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

Here's the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Deardon Field call — a diesel Audi A4, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those tolerances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## When our engineers get to you in Spencers Wood: what happens

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Out flows the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers clean your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away.

We do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Draining your Dacia Duster, changing your filter where there is a serviceable one, purging the lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of it waiting in your lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Spencers Wood Library — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our engineers work, and so the location itself is hardly ever the trouble. A narrow parking spot trumps a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Spencers Wood

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this problem underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Spencers Wood page. Both are ours to handle.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than after that. Then give us a call about the Vauxhall Astra, the diesel one, near Spencers Wood Village Hall. Don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a vehicle, and it is something our engineers work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Spencers Wood pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where the car is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Spencers Wood

## I'm on a forecourt in Spencers Wood. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission we attend BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with your car?

Never switch your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Berkshire and in Spencers Wood: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
