# How Worried Should You Be? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Spring Vale

Less than you probably are, provided it has not been started.

"Have I wrecked it?" is the first question anyone in Spring Vale asks, and the honest answer is usually no, because petrol left in a diesel tank harms nothing until it's dragged through the fuel system — by ignition priming, by your starter, or by driving.

To leave the car like that, ring Petrol in Diesel and leave your engine alone.

The remainder of this page explains what petrol actually does to a diesel, how to tell how far it has got, and how to make sure it does not happen to you again.

## What petrol in a diesel does to the motor

Two tasks fall to diesel on its route round a motor.

Before it combusts, it lubricates — then it combusts.

Designed to extremely fine gaps, your injectors and your pump rely on your diesel moving through them to stop their surfaces wearing against one another.

The second task petrol does not do at all, and the first it does badly.

A pump running on a petrol mix is wearing itself out, because petrol is thinner than diesel and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Petrol is also made to resist igniting under compression — the opposite of what a diesel needs from its fuel — and that is where the rattling comes.

Put these together and the shape of the trouble is plain.

It's circulation that causes the damage, not contact.

Petrol in a tank is a fuel fault.

Once your pump has been running on that petrol, a mechanical fault has begun: anything shed by a pump that's wearing travels downstream to the injectors with the fuel.

## How serious is petrol in a diesel? Four scenarios our technicians see in Spring Vale

The best case there can be: filled up, never started.

Only your tank has petrol in it, so the task is emptying that tank and purging the fuel system where the vehicle stands. This scenario can only truly happen at a forecourt: anywhere else, your car got there by being driven.

Ignition on, or started for a second.

With your system primed, the lines and filter already hold petrol that came from your tank.

Drain, flush, deal with your filter: still normally easy.

Some miles driven, and your pump has spent every one of them working on thinned fuel.

How hard the car was driven counts as much as how far, and the work takes in that tank, the fuel lines, the fuel filter and fresh fuel through the whole circuit.

On the school run to Lanesfield Primary School, the distance is small.

Getting as far as Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, makes a very different job — as does any miles on the M6, under 5 miles from Spring Vale, with the engine working hard all the way.

It complained, and only then stopped: smoke, clattering, a throttle gone soft, an idle gone lumpy.

That's the engine telling you its fuel no longer is acting like diesel.

Whether it's the verge on Timmis Close, a lay-by or a side road, stop where you are then leave it.

Lasting damage is very unusual if a vehicle is stopped soon, and the fuel drain and flush-through that still come first deal with it.

## Petrol in a diesel myths Spring Vale drivers hear

"Top it up the rest of the way with diesel and it will be fine" — a myth. It will not.

Nothing is removed by topping up — you're left with a fuller tank, still the same mixture.

The idea behind the advice — that diesel fuel systems accept petrol by percentage — is wrong.

Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite.

Lubrication counts more on newer diesels, not less, because their fuel passes through finer components at higher pressure.

The myth that catches motorists out: if it starts and drives, it must be unharmed.

Any petrol motor fed diesel usually will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them.

Nothing seems to have happened when a diesel fed petrol fires up, ticks over and drives away, as it usually does; meanwhile your pump grinds.

Being able to run is not proof of being fine.

An old fix for a separate fault lies behind this one. Myth: "Add some two-stroke oil and drive it home."

It doesn't put back what petrol has thinned, and that petrol is still in your tank after that.

If your engine has been run, part of the petrol sits in your filter and the fuel lines, not your tank — and the next start pulls it straight back through your pump. So the myth "drain your tank yourself and you are sorted" does not hold.

Besides, petrol emptied into a can by the road is truly dangerous.

## How does petrol in a diesel happen?

It is rarely carelessness, and no one does it on purpose.

A diesel nozzle generally will not fit a petrol motor, but the smaller petrol nozzle goes into the filler of a diesel almost without resistance — so forecourts make this one mistake straightforward, and only in one direction.

Routine and your car falling out of step is how it occurs.

Courtesy car, hire car, or a vehicle that is new.

A household with one petrol and one diesel on the drive.

A forecourt you know, only with its pumps arranged differently.

A train to catch, and a hurried fill on the way to Coseley.

A new-to-you diesel Renault Clio, its first fuelling, and a motorist used to petrol: precisely when it occurs.

Throw in rain, a phone call or a back seat full of children, and the hand repeats what it has always done.

## How to prevent petrol in a diesel on your next fill-up in Spring Vale

- The label is what counts, and so read the petrol pump rather than the colour: in the UK unleaded handles are normally green and diesel black, but not on each forecourt.

- The first fill in a new car is the time to check your filler flap — on it, or on the cap, plenty of motors state which fuel to use.

- One of each in the household? Label the key to your diesel — a coloured fob, a sticker — since intending to remember is not enough.

- Say it before you lift it. On your first fill in a new or hired car, say "diesel" aloud before you lift the nozzle off the pump. It seems daft and it does the trick.

- Put your phone away. This is an easy mistake to make whilst you are thinking about something else.

- Add-on devices are available for cars without one, and some diesels are built with a filler that will not accept a petrol nozzle. Helpful — but a safety net only, never a reason to stop checking the label.

- Less petrol means a thinner mixture, and so stop as soon as you notice — though remembering that your next stage is unchanged. It is still not to start the vehicle.

## Petrol already in a diesel in Spring Vale? Start here

Then, there is only a short order of things.

Starting it is out, and so is switching on the ignition.

Ask the attendants to help you push it clear of the pump if you're still on the forecourt, whether that's Shell or somewhere else.

Then call 0333 366 0103 and tell us what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

AdBlue, not petrol? Then say so. Corrosion and deposits, not lost lubrication, make it a different fault — Spring Vale has a page all for it.

## One petrol in a diesel job in Spring Vale costs more than another. Why?

The four scenarios above are four different tasks, so no single quote for this would be fair.

Which of them you're in is chiefly what shifts the cost.

Two things follow that: the petrol that was put in as a share of what the tank holds, then the spot the vehicle is in and whether a van can reach it safely.

Three queries come first, before any quote, instead of after — what was put in, how much, has it run — and that is the reason.

A range becomes a straight figure once those replies are in.

## Fuel drain cover across West Midlands, Spring Vale included

Petrol in diesel call-outs in Spring Vale — part of the WV postcode area — go to teams that also cover the spots round it, Ladymoor, Deepfields and Ettingshall among them.

A forecourt, a supermarket car park, a lay-by or your own driveway are all locations our engineers work, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

## In Spring Vale and still at the pump?

Then, you could not be in a better place.

Phone, and leave it switched off.
