# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Springfield?

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Springfield and the remainder of Shropshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Our technicians can explain what the next step will be. Call us — this comes before everything else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the car. And once started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Switching the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.

- Don't add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would much rather come to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Springfield Way, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Get your location ready before you dial. A postcode starting SY2 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. Those responses shape everything that comes after.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, parked at Shrewsbury since breakfast? The day has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the run in that pulled thinned diesel through your pump. Phone us before you drive it.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A good chunk of the job gets completed at the pump, as that is where it often kicks off.

Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

At the forecourt, the mistake is spotted with the engine never started, and no place else does it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Nissan Qashqai around Springfield and you are now stuck at ALDI with a boot full of shopping, ring us. Don't fire it up a second time to exit that spot. We'll come out to you, clear your tank, rinse those fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little diesel, which is why those are usually the simple cases.

## Do our technicians cover your corner of Springfield?

Being a residential suburb, Springfield gets a frequent call, while the villages nearby come along on the same trip: Sutton and Betton Strange, Emstrey and Coleham, Belle Vue.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns around Shropshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Ring us to ask instead of presuming, particularly when you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles with.

The ground the page spans is on this map.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our engineers cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

## Stranded at the roadside somewhere around Springfield?

Not everyone has a chance to pull over anywhere sensible.

A normal call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge beside Pool Rise or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Sit with the car if it's wise to wait there, and clear of the car if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

We will take the van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.

The parts that should be getting oiled are wearing instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank fires up and pulls away just fine. Risk the drive home from The Charles Darwin? Not a chance. Ring us and leave the Ford Focus where it stands.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M54 comes into it — under 10 miles from Springfield.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are normally lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't restart the car to reposition.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what we bring.

## Where's Springfield?

Springfield is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 72 metres. Springfield lies near the villages of Sutton, Betton Strange, and Emstrey, and is approximately 26 miles from Wolverhampton. Springfield has a population of around 4471 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Springfield is located in the West Midlands region, about 137 miles northwest of London.

## Once we arrive with you around Springfield: what we do

- Our technicians establish what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- The contaminated mixture comes from your tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

There is no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you phone from close to Mereside Community Centre: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, so the location itself is rarely the issue — we'd far rather deal with a narrow parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the BMW X1, change your filter where there is a workable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, because by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines instead of in the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Springfield?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas the issue under it's a different one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Springfield page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that is a misfilled diesel Peugeot 208 telling you what is wrong. Never start the car to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, close to St Giles' Church Hall or anywhere else.

## Springfield prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank holds.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Springfield drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Springfield?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place.

Often, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It is salvageable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

The pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Springfield and across Shropshire.
