# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Springpark

With that tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Springpark and the remainder of Highland, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us before everything else happens, so you'll hear what comes next.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Do not fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car typically won't run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It isn't okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.

- Don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Hill Place, turn the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Our van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning KW14 8, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you call.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run — these three answers decide your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the drive back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over the Skoda Octavia outside Thurso while the work goes on, and our team would far rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

The work starts at the pump, generally. Quite often the work wraps up there too.

The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Gleaner? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere we work, and routinely.

Nowhere else except a garage can the mistake be caught with the engine still untouched.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the offer.

Shifting the car four lengths doesn't justify starting the engine.

## Springpark plus the villages beside it

The same runs carry us to Mountpleasant, Thurso East, Millbank, Thurso and Mountvernon along with Springpark, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Highland, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing about if our technicians come.

Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Contact us to ask.

The map marks the area the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground our engineers serve, and none of that asks the vehicle to move to us.

## Roadside call-outs across Springpark

Not everyone has a chance to pull over anywhere safe.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge of Royal Terrace, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Stay with the car if it's sensible to be in it, but out of it when it's not.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

A van coming to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Three replies determine most of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we reach your car in the car park by Grove Lounge. Then the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the lines are flushed, and where your Audi A3 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and your system primed, our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before you set off.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local M90 comes into it — over 50 miles from Springpark.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the over 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Sir George's Park went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and phone us.

## A little about Springpark

Springpark is a coastal suburban area in the Highland county of Scotland, situated at an elevation of 28 metres. Springpark lies near several neighbouring communities, including Mountpleasant, Thurso East, and Millbank, and is located approximately 81 miles from the city of Inverness. Springpark is characterized by its predominant semi-detached housing stock and is home to a population of around 1711 residents.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around Springpark

- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- The polluted mixture is pulled from that tank.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the issue, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- Once it's turned on, we check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to drive away.

We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Three things help when you ring from close to The Toll Gallery: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot we work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Vauxhall Astra, change the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the whole system, as by this point the worst of it is waiting in the lines rather than in the tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Springpark?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue underneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Springpark page. Both are ours to handle.

## Springpark prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank can hold.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Touran that made it by Old St. Peter's Kirk needs your system purged, not emptied.

## Springpark motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt in Springpark. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this takes place.

Our engineers attend Gulf and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It is recoverable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

Draining misfilled cars, Springpark and the rest of Highland, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
