# St Athan: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across St Athan and the rest of The Vale of Glamorgan. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Phone before all else happens, and you'll learn what follows from there.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Don't fire it up — and do not rely on it if it runs. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Lane, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode that starts CF62 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- What went in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has started — these three details determine your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A rushed fill on the way in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has waited outside Llantwit Major for three hours. Ring us then keep the vehicle where it sits. What counts is the drive in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — greases the pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a fluid stripped of most of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are until we arrive.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

A large chunk of the work gets done at the pump, as that is where it often starts.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is typically where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

At the forecourt, it gets spotted with the motor never started, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car is.

The attendants will generally happily move the car away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing.

Rolling it four spaces doesn't merit firing the engine.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane in St Athan and you are now sat at Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, call us. Do not fire it up again to get out of the bay. We'll come out to you, empty your tank, clean the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any fuel, which is why these are usually the straightforward cases.

## Coverage near St Athan

Being a coastal village, St Athan has a routine visit, whilst its neighbours nearby come with it on the same trip: Beggars Pound and Castleton Park, Boys Village and Gileston, St Athan Boys Village.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing at all about if we come.

Ring us to enquire instead of guessing — borders especially, and anywhere your phone might misread.

The ground the page spans appears on this map.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle never needs to come to us.

## Stuck by the kerb anywhere around St Athan?

Not everyone gets the chance to stop somewhere safe.

If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge of Rock Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or move away from it depends on whether staying there is wise.

Do not start it up to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system.

We will send the van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than pressing on.

The components that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and moves off just fine. Try the trip home from The Three Horseshoes? No. Phone then leave the BMW 3 Series where it is.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 10 miles out of St Athan, the local M4 is what matters now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe junction and turn off.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Castleton Wood in that diesel Nissan Qashqai is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of it.

## Where's St Athan?

St Athan is a coastal village in the Vale of Glamorgan, situated near the Bristol Channel at an elevation of 31 metres. St Athan lies approximately 11 miles west of Cardiff and is surrounded by nearby places such as Beggars Pound and Castleton Park. St Athan has a population of around 1247 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. St Athan is also relatively close to the Boys Village, a nearby residential area.

## What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around St Athan

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- That tank gets emptied of it.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that started the issue.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running correctly.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around St Athan

Don't start it: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal in St Athan has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in St Athan

What moves the price is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position normally get driven again before anyone calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Ford Kuga is now sitting near St Tathan's Church. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of a motor packing up. Switch off. Call us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from St Athan drivers

## Fuel drains on a St Athan petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this happens.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It is fixable far more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Don't switch the engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across The Vale of Glamorgan and around St Athan: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
