# Stand: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, then keep your engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift it.

Cleared then flushed, just where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes to come more than on everything else.

What follows is the sequence from this point, wherever in Stand you are.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

In this order, all before anything else:

- The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank into the parts it harms.

- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Get the vehicle simple to see before anything else — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere close to you.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll it clear of the petrol pump. Don't crank it to shift it, however short the distance.

- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the till receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

If you were still driving when you realised, stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M60, under a mile from Stand, that means the next junction. Stage one comes next.

## Each Stand fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?

What comes next turns on one answer, and just one.

If the engine hasn't run at all:

- No place but the tank: that is where that petrol yet is.

- Usually it is drained and rinsed right where your car stands.

- Being here is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of step one.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- Petrol has been pulled out of that tank, past the filter and into the fuel lines.

- A bigger run takes it all the way to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- Distance is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

The line falls there since diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that's just waiting in a tank.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that move the vehicle.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Stand: what to have prepared

Whether the technician goes round or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- Where you are. A postcode starting M45 7 is the best start.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Gresham Close or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, like the one at Morrisons.

- That it's a diesel, plus the make and model of the vehicle.

- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Stand, so say which.

- The quantity: your receipt's litres, or else how long you had the nozzle in.

- If it has run, how far and how heavily — and whether it's run at all.

- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company contracts — so it's faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians get there.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then. Email is fine as well if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.

## The wait for a Stand fuel drain, and what to do in it

Hold to these: kindly meant help causes the damage during the wait.

- Where your car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.

- A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.

- Anything from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank stays put regardless.

- Even the radio or your windows aren't worth switching the ignition on for.

## When our van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

- The price comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and if it has run — since those answers shape this job.

- Out of the tank comes the tainted mix: that tank is cleared.

- The lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond your tank, and your lines are holding it.

- The filter is seen to. Cleared, or swapped where the car has a workable one.

- The fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

- The start. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system primed, it's fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly.

Our engineers stay until it is running on clean diesel.

Lasting damage is very rare if it has been noticed early, so your car can go straight back to normal driving.

## Back on the road in Stand after your fuel drain

- Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Just drive normally.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over and ring us back.

- Your documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
