# Starvecrow: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Starvecrow and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us before everything else happens, and you'll know what follows next.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Never start it — and do not trust it if it starts. Here is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off without complaint for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.

- Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Fernholt? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky place suits us better than a started motor.

- Get your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts TN10 3 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has been run. The responses decide whatever happens next.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

It begins at the pump, usually. Frequently the job finishes on site too.

Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the one place this ends up spotted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing.

Rolling the car four spaces doesn't justify starting it.

The phone call we like runs like this: diesel Renault Megane, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at The Co-operative. What we are truly asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

## Will we cover your corner of Starvecrow?

Starvecrow is a small village, and we go out to it and to the villages around it on those same runs: Trench Wood, Dene Park, Cage Green, Higham Wood and Coldharbour.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all places around Kent, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Ring us and enquire instead of presuming, especially where you're on the boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

The ground the page includes sits on the map.

Your vehicle does not need to come to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Cage Green Primary School, already late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone us. Three miles in your Mercedes C-Class seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a frantic morning dash needs plenty.

## Kerbside stops in Starvecrow

Not everybody has a safe spot to stop.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge beside Willow Lea, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or move away from it hangs on whether sitting in it seems sensible.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the car to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

A van driving to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the car than pressing on.

Three replies decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we reach your car in the car park by the pub in the village. After that the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Peugeot 3008 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and your system bled, our technicians start the car and make sure it runs properly before you drive away.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 10 miles from Starvecrow, the local M26 is what counts here.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Audi A6 drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Poult Wood Golf Course - 9 Hole went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

## What happens when our engineers get to you around Starvecrow

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.

- Our technicians empty your tank of the polluted mixture.

- What is left in the system should not be what started the problem, and so the lines get purged and your filter cleaned.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

## Starvecrow AdBlue removal is a distinct job

Do not fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Starvecrow page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Starvecrow?

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

By now the tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Ford Fiesta that made it near Longmead Stadium needs its circuit purged. Emptying is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Starvecrow

## Fuel drains on a Starvecrow petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Three Elm Service Station is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable far more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Mobile fuel draining in Starvecrow and across Kent — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
