# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sticklepath?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Sticklepath and the rest of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Call us before everything else starts, and you will hear what follows next.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And if started, don't rely on it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: flicking it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We'd much rather drive to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Sticklepath Hill, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Before you dial, get your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning EX31 2 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has run — the three details decide the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A fair share of the job gets completed at a forecourt, because that is where it usually begins.

Still at Asda? Then that is normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before your engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting this is halted.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Very much worth doing.

Rolling the car four lengths doesn't justify starting the motor.

Car parks like the one at Asda are a spot our technicians work in frequently, and your fuel is rarely the awkward part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a technician can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is pointing. When our engineers can't work next to the diesel Nissan Qashqai we'll shift it without starting it — and that is not pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Any start primes that fuel system and pulls more of the mix out of the tank and on to your pump, so a motor shuffled twice into a roomier space has gradually turned into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped.

## Will our engineers cover your corner of Sticklepath?

These same journeys bring us to Barnstaple, Lake, Pilton, Pottington and Newport besides Sticklepath, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Devon, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

Phone to enquire rather than presuming, particularly where you're on the border or anywhere your phone struggles with.

This map is the ground this page covers.

The vehicle does not need to come to us. We work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Sticklepath: stuck where you stopped

The opportunity to stop anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge on Barnstaple Western Bypass, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you stay with the car or keep away from it hangs on if being in it seems safe.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than pressing on.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class parked in the parking area by The Water Gate with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone drives it home. Leave it there overnight and phone in the morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it waits. What we'll want to know is if that drive there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and what does not burn can get past the rings and into the sump.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the M5 counts, under 50 miles out of Sticklepath.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us. Happy on the way out to Rock Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol weakens diesel; thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW X1 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

## A little about Sticklepath

Sticklepath is a suburban area in Devon, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 16 metres, and is located near the city of Exeter. Sticklepath has a population of approximately 1392 residents and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Sticklepath is close to nearby places such as Barnstaple, Lake, and Pilton, and is about 172.8 miles from London.

## What we do when our engineers arrive with you around Sticklepath

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.

- Our technicians clear your tank of the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- The motor is fired up and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Sticklepath?

Don't start it: that first rule applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Sticklepath has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up by North Devon Leisure Centre that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Sticklepath

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the filter, into your lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Audi Q3 that got near Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon wants its system cleared. Emptying is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Sticklepath

## I'm on a forecourt in Sticklepath. Can you drain it on the spot?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than people fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

Your pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Leave it shut off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Devon and around Sticklepath: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
