# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stockheath? Don't Start It

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Stockheath or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers can explain what the next stage is. Contact us — that happens ahead of everything else.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And having started, don't depend on it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which carries the petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Do not thin it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather come to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Kingsworthy Road, switch your hazards on and leave the car there.

- Before you dial, have your location. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting PO9 2 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, about how much, plus whether the car has been started. Those replies settle all that happens next.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a big share of it ends.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the one spot it can be stopped before the motor has fired.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

The call our technicians want runs like this: diesel Audi A4, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off outside Lidl. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

## Stockheath and the areas beside it

Stockheath is a coastal area, and so we go out to the town and to the villages around it on the same runs: Havant, Leigh Park, West Leigh, Bedhampton and Denvilles.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places in Hampshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

On a border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.

The area the page includes sits on our map.

The car doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Trosnant Junior School, running late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, ring us. Three miles in the Ford Focus seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a frantic morning dash asks for plenty.

## Stranded at the roadside in Stockheath

Not everyone has a sensible spot to pull over.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Alresford Road because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay beside your car or step away from it hangs on if sitting in it feels wise.

Don't restart your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the system.

We'll bring the van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than driving on.

It will fire up. It will drive off just fine. That's the issue, as a diesel on a diluted tank behaves usually whilst grinding the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't chance the trip home from The Heron — leave the Peugeot 3008 then phone.

## Run it already? Pull in, and see this

This is where the local A3(M) comes in, under 3 miles from Stockheath.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not restart the car to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring differs.

## Stockheath itself

Stockheath is a coastal locality in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to the neighbouring communities of Havant and Leigh Park. Stockheath lies at a low elevation of around 13 metres, reflecting its proximity to the sea. Stockheath has a mix of housing types, but terraced homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Stockheath is located within commuting distance of London, approximately 58 miles away.

## The job around Stockheath, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away comes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- We pour new diesel in and prime the system.

- It is started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

## Stockheath AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The problem is not the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits in its place.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Stockheath has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about the diesel Kia Sportage near Leigh Park Community Centre. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there anyway. We ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Stockheath

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

The fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail: that is where the mix is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Volkswagen Polo that made it by Havant Methodist Church needs the system flushed rather than drained.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Stockheath

## Fuel drains on a Stockheath petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Turned off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
