# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stockport

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Stockport and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

A single ring to us will be enough: our technicians will tell you what happens next. Make that first.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Switching the ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and we'd sooner come to an odd place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Piccadilly, switch those hazards on and keep it there.

- Before you ring, gather your position. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts SK1 3 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three details determine the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark volume of it, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through that injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the way back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over the Volkswagen Golf at the nearest station while the work happens, and we would far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Much of this work begins at the pump, which means a good share of that is completed on site.

The drain normally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's agreement, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your engine never started, and no place else manages that.

Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

The attendants will usually happily move it out from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Rolling the car four lengths doesn't warrant starting the engine.

## Stockport and the villages next to it

Stockport is a riverside town, so we head out to it and to the places near it on the same journeys: Shaw Heath, Lancashire Hill, Edgeley, Portwood and Cale Green.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and the majority of places across Greater Manchester have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Contact us to enquire rather than assuming, particularly where you are on a border or somewhere the satnav can't find.

The map marks the patch this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory we serve, and none of it asks the car to come to us.

Somebody will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy is an inconvenience; the same vehicle restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let people grumble, then call us.

## Stranded at the roadside in Stockport

Not everybody finds a suitable spot to pull over.

A common call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of Lord Street or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Okay where you are? Wait by it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Our van driving to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

A diesel BMW 3 Series sitting in the car park outside The Wellington holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till someone drives it home. Leave the vehicle there overnight and ring us next morning. Nothing worsens as it sits. What we'll want to know is whether that trip there was short and cold, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local M60 comes in — under a mile from Stockport.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

## Stockport itself

Stockport is a significant town situated in the county of Greater Manchester, England, with a scenic riverside location. It is positioned near several major towns, including Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne, making it a central hub in the region. The town is notable for being the point where the rivers Goyt and Tame converge, forming the River Mersey. Stockport serves as the primary settlement within the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport.

## What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Stockport

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The tank is emptied of it.

- We flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system is not what created the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- After it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Hardly ever the trouble, the spot. On-street is the most common place we work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Stockport Central Library, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Nissan Qashqai gets cleared, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stockport is a different problem

Don't start it: that opening rule stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this issue itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Stockport page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfilled Audi A4, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly by Richard Cobden, and leave the restarting alone.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Stockport?

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Stockport

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Stockport?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Don't switch the car back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining misfilled cars, Stockport and the rest of Greater Manchester, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
