# Straw: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Motor off. Leave the car that way — no moment on, no shifting it anywhere.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing decides that more than the next few minutes do.

Here's the order of things from here, wherever you are around Straw.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Do the following before anything else, in this order.

- Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime your fuel system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the parts it damages. Leave the vehicle off completely.

- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Get your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is moving traffic anywhere close to you.

- The staff will usually help you roll it away from the petrol pump. Let them, then move it by hand — not under the motor, even for a few yards.

- The first question you will be asked is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and the receipt says both. Keep it.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M77 at the next junction if that is where you are, over 50 miles from Straw, and stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in every Straw fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If it has not once been started:

- Nowhere but your tank: that's where the petrol yet is.

- Where your car sits is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- This is the best position to be in, and the reason step one counts.

Motor run, even for a moment?

- Your lines and your filter now carry petrol drawn out of the tank.

- On a longer run it has got to the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.

- The farther it went, the larger the job — your lines, the fuel filter, and sometimes more besides.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that's only waiting in a tank.

Pump that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Straw, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A technician that circles against a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

- Your location: a postcode beginning BT45 7 serves best.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that is Wallace Cottages or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at the local shops, for instance — and it's much easier to find.

- The make and model of your car, and the fact it's a diesel.

- Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Straw.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either gives us how much.

- The distance it did, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- Settle who owns the vehicle before our engineers get there: some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and doing it faster first.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Straw fuel drain on its way? While you wait

During the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — so these matter.

- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere exposed? Get clear of the traffic then wait away from it. Safe where it sits? Wait with it.

- A helpful passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from your boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.

- A home-made drain leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky too.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition stays off.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

- Fuel, volume, whether it has run: the answers decide the job, and that is why we give a quote after them rather than before.

- Your tank is emptied. The polluted mix comes out of that tank.

- If it ran, the lines are carrying petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they are flushed.

- Then your filter: changed where there is a usable one, cleared where there's not.

- Your system is primed on fresh diesel.

- The start. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system bled, it's started and tested to confirm it runs correctly.

We wait until it is running on fresh diesel.

The car goes back to normal driving right away, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed quickly.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road in Straw

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Just drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over and call us back.

- The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your paperwork.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
