# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stroud: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave the car off.

Cleared then rinsed, just where it sits: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else.

Here is the sequence of things from now, wherever you are in Stroud.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through these in sequence, before you do anything else.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Get your car easy to see first — hazard lights on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the pump. Do not fire it up to shift it, however short the distance.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt answers that, and that's where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M5, under 5 miles from Stroud, that means the next exit. Stage one follows.

## Stroud fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?

What comes next rests on one answer, and only one.

Motor never run at all?

- The petrol remains in the tank, and just there.

- Where your car stands is normally where this work happens: a drain, then a flush.

- Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it is the best spot to be in.

If your motor has been run, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left that tank already, gone through your filter, and reached your lines.

- A longer run takes it all the way to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- Miles is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does.

Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Stroud: what our technicians need

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that goes round.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting GL5 3 is the best start.

- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — King Street, or wherever you have pulled up.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one at Tesco, and it's simple.

- The vehicle. Make, model, plus that it is a diesel.

- Which was put in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Stroud has a page just for that. So say.

- How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.

- The distance it covered, and how hard, if it has run at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that is quicker settled before we turn up than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — does the trick too.

## Stroud fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

- Your safety comes before the car. Somewhere exposed? Get clear of the traffic and wait away from it. Safe where it stands? Stay with it.

- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the car a short way.

- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out a second time.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank remains put anyway.

- Leave the ignition off — the windows and your radio too.

## When the van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers set this job, which is why our price comes after them and not before.

- That tank is drained. The contaminated mixture comes out of the tank.

- Your lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond the tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Then your filter: replaced where there is a serviceable one, cleared where there's not.

- Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.

- We fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the system, then confirm that it's running properly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, our technicians remain with it.

When it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual, and the vehicle returns to normal driving straight away.

## After the fuel drain is done: driving around Stroud a second time

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do after it's been started on clean fuel.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, so keep the paperwork.

- Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're somewhere hard to explain or near a border.

## Petrol in a diesel anywhere across Gloucestershire? Off, then ring

Engine off. Keys out. Receipt in your pocket. That is the whole of step one, and Petrol in Diesel takes it from there — by the roadside, on the forecourt or on your driveway.
