# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sturton le Steeple?

Don't fire up your engine. While the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Sturton le Steeple and the rest of Nottinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us before anything else starts, and you will see what happens from there.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Don't fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: turning it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those parts.

- Never water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Cross Street? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An odd place suits us better than a started engine.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode that starts DN22 9 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.

- What went in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has fired — these three details shape the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Renault Megane parked at Gainsborough Lea Road this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone before you head off to collect it.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

A fair chunk of this work ends up completed at the pump, because that's where it often begins.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, and so if you are still at Gulf that's normally where this drain takes place.

A forecourt is the one place the mistake is caught before the engine has started.

Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Worth doing.

Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

## Will our technicians reach your part of Sturton le Steeple?

Sturton le Steeple is a rural village, and our vans go out to it and to the villages near it on those same runs: Fenton, North Leverton with Habblesthorpe, South Wheatley, Bole and South Leverton.

There are dedicated pages for most locations around Nottinghamshire, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing about whether we come.

Assuming is the habit to skip, above all on the boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Call us and ask.

That map shows the patch this page covers.

Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We operate across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes the lines and draws more petrol past the fuel filter and into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags outside Sturton CofE Primary School is a nuisance, while the same vehicle started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Leave it, let them moan, and give us a call.

## Sturton le Steeple: stranded wherever you pulled up

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge beside Leverton Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Okay where you are? Wait beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the car to get to somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that's no bother for us.

Simple job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Peugeot 3008 left by the pub in the village with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave it then phone us once it is light. Expect a question about the drive there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the sump.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

This is where the local Doncaster By-Pass comes in, under 15 miles away from Sturton le Steeple.

A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never start the car to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

Normal on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how that trip to Sturton Playing Fields went, the tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Vauxhall Astra drove, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then call us.

## Sturton le Steeple itself

Sturton le Steeple is a small village in Nottinghamshire, situated in the East Midlands region of England, with a low elevation of around 18 metres. Sturton le Steeple lies near the villages of Fenton, North Leverton with Habblesthorpe, and South Wheatley, and is approximately 14 miles from the city of Lincoln. Sturton le Steeple has a population of around 548 people, predominantly living in detached houses.

## Our visit in Sturton le Steeple, step by step

- The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Away goes the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

We flush the lines rather than only clearing your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already arrived at the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes A-Class parked up by Sturton le Steeple Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Sturton le Steeple?

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Sturton le Steeple page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Sturton le Steeple prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank holds.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Sturton le Steeple drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Sturton le Steeple, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good part of this work takes place there, so yes.

We attend JET and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It's fixable far more frequently than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave it switched off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people assume.

Across Nottinghamshire and around Sturton le Steeple: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
