# Summit: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Motor off. Leave the vehicle like that — no moment on, no shifting it at all.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a drain and a flush, done right where the vehicle sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

From here on, in order, wherever you are around Summit:

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through these in order, before you do anything else.

- Bleeding the fuel system pulls petrol from the tank toward the parts it harms, and turning your ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys come out, and your ignition remains off completely.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.

- Close to passing traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before anything else, and so your car is simple to spot.

- However short the way, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. At a forecourt, roll the car clear of the pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to help.

- The first thing you will be asked is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and your receipt shows both. Keep it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M66, under 3 miles from Summit, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services farther on. Stage one starts after that.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Summit fuel drain

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Engine never run at all?

- All the petrol sits inside that tank, and just there.

- The job is a drain and a flush, normally done where your car is.

- No position is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.

If it's been started, even for a second:

- Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, past your filter and into your lines.

- Run it farther and that petrol gets to the injectors, having passed through your fuel pump first.

- Flushing the lines, the filter seen to, and sometimes more: this job expands as the distance does.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does.

Petrol resting in a tank damages nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## Summit, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little planning.

- OL10 4 plus the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- Name the road — Summit Street or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Morrisons, and it's simple.

- The vehicle. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.

- Which was put in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Summit has a page for it. So tell us.

- The quantity: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- If it's run, how far plus how heavily — and whether it's run at all.

- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire and company contracts — so it is faster to settle whose car it is before we get there.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## Summit fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

The wait is where kindly meant help does the damage. Stick to these.

- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, stay with it.

- A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or moving it a few yards.

- Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.

- A home-made drain misses your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous too.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: your ignition stays off.

## When the van arrives: the fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers shape the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Your tank is emptied. The polluted blend comes from your tank.

- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they're rinsed.

- The fuel filter is sorted. Cleared, or changed where the vehicle has a serviceable one.

- Bleeding your system comes after fresh diesel is in.

- First start on clean diesel. When bleeding is complete, the motor is fired up and we make sure that it runs properly.

Our engineers stay until it's running on fresh diesel.

If it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon, and the vehicle returns to normal driving right away.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving around Summit once more

- Once it has been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.

- Your documents covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
