# Sunnymede: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Sunnymede or the remainder of Essex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers will show you what the following stage will be. Phone — that goes before everything else.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And having started, never believe it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would much rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Wren Close, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Before you dial, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts CM11 2 — that is what determines whether the van turns up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has been run. Those replies decide all that follows.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, so a diesel Skoda Octavia parked outside Billericay this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew diluted diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone us before you set off to collect it.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

The work starts at a pump, usually. Frequently the work ends there as well.

The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's consent, that is a spot our technicians work, and often.

At a garage, it gets spotted with your motor never started, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the offer.

Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Waitrose now. Time elapsed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## Do we cover your part of Sunnymede?

Sunnymede is a residential suburb, and so we go out to the town and to the areas by it on the same journeys: Billericay, South Green, Gooseberry Green, Tye Common and Great Burstead.

Our engineers do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places in Essex, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Phone to check rather than presuming, particularly if you are on a border or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

Use the map for the area included here.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of that requires your vehicle to move to us.

## Stuck at the roadside in Sunnymede

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone.

A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge of The Courtyard or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Clear of your car if it's not sensible to be in it, with it if it is.

Do not start up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the fuel system.

We will bring our van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for the car that's a lot better than driving on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Your M25 is the one which counts here, and runs under 10 miles from Sunnymede.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

## Where is Sunnymede?

Sunnymede is a suburban area in Essex, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 59 metres, and is located near the cities of Chelmsford and London. Sunnymede has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant. Sunnymede is close to nearby places such as Billericay, South Green, and Gooseberry Green, and is home to a population of approximately 4717 residents. Sunnymede's riverside setting provides a unique character to the area.

## The visit around Sunnymede, step by step

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away comes the tainted fuel.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.

- We pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.

- Once it is started, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

The pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing one loses moves on with your fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Phone us, then leave the diesel Mercedes C-Class where it's close to Billericay Baptist Church.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Sunnymede?

The problem isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Sunnymede has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — close to St John the Divine, Outwood Common or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Sunnymede

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that got close to Billericay United Reformed Church needs its system cleared. Clearing is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Sunnymede drivers

## I'm on a forecourt around Sunnymede. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work takes place.

We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Sunnymede and throughout Essex.
