# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sutton?

Do not start the motor. While the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Sutton and the rest of East Sussex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us before anything else begins, so you'll hear what happens next.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you never believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Alfriston Road? Hazards on, then leave it there. An odd location suits us better than a started motor.

- A van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning BN25 3, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- What was put in, approximately how much, plus if your car has run — those three facts settle the full visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Renault Clio can sit at Seaford perfectly safely. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst we work is not necessary.

## Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at the forecourt?

It begins at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often the job wraps up there too.

If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is usually where the drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere except the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with your engine still unrun.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

## Sutton and the areas next to it

Sutton is a residential suburb, and so our vans head out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual journeys: East Blatchington, Seaford, Exceat, Bishopstone and Westdean.

Our engineers do come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in East Sussex, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Ring us to ask rather than assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere a satnav can get wrong.

That map is the patch this page spans.

Your car never needs to move to us. We operate over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Sutton: stuck wherever you stopped

Not everybody has a sensible place to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge on Harison Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit by the car if it is wise to wait in it, yet out of the car when it is not.

Do not restart it to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system.

However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

A diesel Audi A4 parked in the car park at The Cinque Ports carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody drives it home. Leave the car there overnight then call us next morning. Nothing deteriorates as it stands. What we'll ask is if the trip there was short and cold, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has travelled

under 50 miles out of Sutton, the M23 is what counts now.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It affects what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through, and petrol thins it. That is the whole process, and it explains the normal Seaford Peace Garden call: a diesel Ford Focus that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts bleeding past clearances instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.

## A little about Sutton

Sutton is a coastal suburban area in East Sussex, situated approximately 11.8 miles east of Brighton and Hove. Sutton sits at an elevation of around 34 metres, overlooking the English Channel. Sutton is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Sutton is close to nearby places such as East Blatchington, Seaford, and Exceat, and is about 51.6 miles south of London.

## What comes next when we reach you in Sutton

- We establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Our engineers drain the tank of all the polluted mixture.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get purged and the filter cleaned.

- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.

- The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Sutton

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Sutton page. Both are ours to handle.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full your tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Insignia by Seaford Head Swimming Pool.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Sutton

One number wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Drain it then put new diesel in — that's the advice you'll get, typically from someone sure of themselves, and it's half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Skoda Superb close to Catholic Church of St Thomas More and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound sensible. What occurs next is the issue: the motor immediately draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. We flush the circuit and take your filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being put right and the car simply starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Sutton motorists

## At a petrol station in Sutton, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers attend Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable much more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Turned off is the way it remains.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume.

Emptying wrongly fuelled cars, Sutton and the rest of East Sussex, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
